Calgary, AB—
July 6 was a memorable day for fans of women’s soccer as the Calgary Foothills WFC (WFC) defeated rival FC Arizona 7-0 at Broadview Park in Calgary. The win was made even sweeter by the presence of leaders from Canada’s women’s soccer community, including guest speaker Diana Matheson of the Northern Super League (NSL) and guest announcer Jacquie Hertlein of the Calgary Women’s Soccer Association.
The Calgary Wild FC also had a big presence, hosting a very popular booth with a variety of never-before-seen merchandise and a “loudest cheer” contest to win free shirts.
But the real stars of the day were the
home team women who put on an amazing display of talent and heart for their fans, including members of the Wild Roses supporter group. WFC Captain Sarah Kinzner led the team to a 2-nothing lead going into the second half with her pair of goals. Perhaps fueled by Matheson’s inspirational halftime talk, WFC returned from the break and dominated the second half. Maggie Zacsko followed Kinzner’s lead with a pair of goals, and Murita Storey, Tori Martyn, and Taegan Stewart added one each, with Stewart’s resulting from a spectacular 40-yard shot to end the game.
Head Coach Lee Tucker said. “We hit the ground running and played at a fast tempo, putting the ball in the net multiple times for the hundreds of fans on hand. We created lots of goal-scoring opportunities throughout, giving the supporters lots to cheer for. Now we wait to hear from the League on the potential of a playoff game to lead us to nationals.”
WFC surprised the crowd, hitting the field in new jerseys representing the Calgary Wild’s signature colours and giving a glimpse into the future. Kinzner and Talia White shared post-game how honoured the team was to wear the new jerseys and expressed their excitement about what the NSL and Calgary Wild mean for Canadian women.
Thanks to Diana Matheson, Jacquie Hertlein, the Calgary Wild, and the Wild Roses, but especially to our game-day sponsor, Sanjel. The support of these individuals and organizations is an important reason for the WFC’s success.
