A Win and a Loss for Foothills WFC and FC League1 Alberta Teams Against Edmonton Scottish

CALGARY, AB: June 1, 2024 –

The Calgary Foothills Men’s (FC) and Women’s (WFC) League1 Alberta teams traveled to the provincial capital Friday to take on the Edmonton Scottish at Hamish Black Field. WFC came home with three points in a 4-2 game while FC continued to search for its elusive first win.

WFC hit the pitch at 5:00 p.m., eager to improve their standing in the league, and they didn’t disappoint despite very difficult, windy conditions. “I’m very proud of the team,” said Head Coach Colin Mackay. “We needed our breakout game, and thanks to strong work from everyone, we found it. Academy players Avril Jamieson and Makenna Ford played well, and Sarah Bach in goal was great.”

Midfielder Grace Hannaford had a big night, netting two Foothills goals. Jamieson had a goal and assisted on Hannaford’s first goal. Ford also scored with an assist from Layla Tarraf, who continues to play strong, determined football.

FC game time was 7:00 p.m. The team has yet to find its first win, losing a heartbreaker to the hometown squad 3-2, despite a solid first half. Goalkeeper Sterling Kerr shared his thoughts. “We were the stronger team until the sixty-minute mark when Scottish proved why they are the top team in the league. We players need to help find solutions and fix the problems we continue to have.”

Forward Owen Antoniuk had a standout performance, scoring two shots for Foothills from close range after some excellent team play. Owen leads the team in scoring with three goals in the three games he has played so far this season.

Both Foothills teams will return to Edmonton on June 7 to meet the Edmonton BTB Soccer Club. Game times are 5:30 for WFC and 7:45 for FC at Clarke Stadium.
