Adekugbe and Plenzik Lead Foothills to Double Win; Teams Advance in League1 Alberta Standings.

CALGARY, AB: July 13, 2024 –

Another double win for Calgary Foothills men’s (FC) and women’s (WFC) League1 Alberta teams on July 12 at Broadview Park in Calgary! Both games were stunners, with FC winning 1-0 against Cavalry FC U21 thanks to a final-minute goal by Captain Gianmarco Plenzik. For the WFC, the win against ASA High Performance (ASA) was even more spectacular thanks to a hat trick from Ruth Adekugbe to bring the team back from behind and a 3-2 win.

WFC continues to climb the league table and currently sits in second place. With 2 games left in the regular season, Head Coach Colin Mackay is looking forward to Sunday’s game against St. Albert Impact to help bump them up to the top spot in their division. “It was a weird game tonight. We came out flying and hit the post a couple of times. We deserved to be leading at the half, but it was the right result in our favour in the end. Down 1-0 at the half, ASA extended their lead early in the second. We put Ruthie Adekugbe in with 20 minutes left, and she single-handedly changed the game, scoring a hat trick in 9 minutes and winning the game for us.”

Along with Adekugbe, Tori Martin had an outstanding night, bringing game intelligence and strong teammate management skills to the field. The always-consistent Layla Tarraf was energized for the entire 90 minutes of play and led by her hard work and competitive mindset.

On the men’s side, an injury to Rodane Cato set the FC team on its heels early in the first half. Thanks to strong leadership from Plenzik, the team was able to maintain its focus and secure a win. Head Coach Marc McLaren said after the game, “It’s all about playing to the end, and the lads did that brilliantly with Gianmarco scoring in the final minute. He kept us going and showed the fans his character and why he is our captain.”

“I also have to give a shoutout to our goalkeeper, Liam Collens, who did an incredible job in his first game of the season. He made some crucial saves to keep the Cavs off the scoreboard.”

FC also continues to climb the League1 standings. Its July 19 game against Edmonton BTB will determine how the regular season ends for the team.

Foothills WFC travels north on July 14 to take on the St. Albert Impact. Game time is 12:00 p.m. LIVESTREAM the game here. Foothills FC host Edmonton BTB on July 19 at Macron Performance Centre. Kickoff is at 7:45. Get your tickets here or at the gate.
