CALGARY, AB – Calgary Foothills WFC [‘Foothills’] will host Edmonton BTB WSC [‘Edmonton BTB’] July 1 at 5:30pm at Broadview Park. Foothills is looking to defend its last two wins in League 1 Alberta, play including a June 16 match against Edmonton BTB where they were victorious winning 4-2.
Head Coach, Sarah Taylor, is optimistic about the way her team has been playing, especially in their two most recent wins. Taylor says, “We’ve been playing well, and capitalizing on opportunities. Both games were great group performances from the team.” She continues, “We have 3 important games left in our schedule and I’m looking forward to seeing how the girls rise to the challenge. We play BTB, St. Albert and Blizzards, respectively, and that is an exciting way to conclude our season. We want to continue improving after each match and we will continue striving to be better each time we step on the pitch. This group has a lot of talent which will lead to some exciting games to finish off the 2023 Women’s League 1 Alberta Exhibition Series.“
Emma Nicholson is one Foothills player who is having a strong year, leading her team with 2 goals in the last four games. Nicholson has played in the UWS Academy since 2022. In 2019, while playing two years up, she was part of the Calgary Foothills team that won the Youth National Championship. In 2022, she was a key player for the team that won the Alberta Youth Soccer League Championship, showcasing her versatility and ability to succeed at different levels of play.
Nicholson made her UWS debut in 2022 against FC Arizona, playing the full game and contributing to her team’s 2-1 win. As Nicholson continues to hone her skills and grow as a player, she is sure to make significant contributions to the Foothills WFC League 1 team this summer.

ABOUT LEAGUE 1 ALBERTA
League 1 Alberta is the province of Alberta’s Pro-Am, standards-based senior league. Founded in 2023 and in its inaugural exhibition season, the League comprises five teams in the men’s and women’s divisions, with Foothills fielding a team in each. The League was announced in 2023 as an exhibition series. It plans to fully launch in 2024 with membership in Canada League 1.

Foothills WFC has operated in Calgary and competed in the United Women’s Soccer League since 2017. The team’s mandate is to be a bridge for the game’s future stars to develop and succeed in Canada while providing our fans with a premier sporting experience. This summer, Foothills WFC has created a second team that is participating in the League 1 Exhibition series to support its pathway to the long-awaited Canadian Women’s Professional Soccer League (Project 8), set to kick off in 2025.
