On a landmark day for women’s sports in Canada, a group of young athletes from our Club experienced a moment they’ll never forget. As the Calgary Wild FC took the field for their inaugural home opener, girls from our 2012G WFH (currently competing in U13 T2) and 2013G WFH (in U12 T3) proudly stepped into their own piece of history as the first-ever ball girls for the Wild.
This opportunity was more than just a chance to be close to the action. For these young players, it was a front-row seat to the future they dream of where women’s professional soccer is not only visible but thriving in their own backyard.
“I just wanted to thank you for the amazing opportunity you gave the girls,” shared one of the team’s managers. “My daughter and her teammates came home so proud to be part of such a special moment for women’s soccer.”
The girls proudly ran the sidelines at McMahon Stadium, watching in awe as the Wild FC showcased their skill, passion, and professionalism. The energy in the stadium was electric, with fans of all ages celebrating not only a team, but a turning point in Canadian sports.
“The girls had a blast being the first set of ball girls,” the manager added. “They left the match inspired, with new dreams of playing for Wild FC one day.”
And it wasn’t just the older girls who felt the impact. One young Foothills Grassroots U8 player was especially thrilled to pose with Echo, the Calgary Wild FC’s lively mascot, soaking in every moment of the experience. Whether it was cheering from the stands or helping keep the game moving on the pitch, the entire event was a celebration of community, inspiration, and the rising tide of women’s sport.
The Calgary Wild FC’s debut marks a historic moment, not only as Alberta’s first professional women’s team but also as part of Canada’s first season of professional women’s soccer. For young Foothills girls and across the province and beyond, it signals that the path from grassroots to the professional stage is more visible—and more possible—than ever.
Opportunities like this don’t just build memories. They build belief. The girls saw what’s possible with hard work, dedication, and a love for the game. And maybe, just maybe, the next generation of Wild FC players stood on that sideline, ball in hand, hearts full of hope.
Calgary Foothills Soccer Club is incredibly proud to have been part of this milestone and looks forward to continuing to support the growth of women’s soccer.
