Foothills is proud to celebrate one of its own, James McGlinchey, who has officially signed his first professional contract with Cavalry FC. James, an 18-year-old midfielder and Foothills Academy graduate, inked an Exceptional Young Talent deal that will keep him with Cavalry through 2027. This milestone marks the culmination of years of hard work and development, and it stands as an example of the Foothills program’s success in nurturing young talent.
From Foothills Beginnings to Professional Ranks
James’s journey to the pro level began right here at Foothills, where he has been part of the family since the age of eight. Over the past decade, he consistently demonstrated dedication, leadership, and skill on the pitch as he progressed through our youth ranks. His coaches and teammates at Foothills watched him grow from a promising youngster into a standout player, honing his technique and game intelligence at each step. Foothills takes great pride in providing a pathway for players like James, and his signing is a proud moment for all who have been a part of his development.
James had this to say about his time with Foothills. “Growing up with Foothills has been a privilege and I’ve made so many memories that will last a long time. I’ve met so many amazing people involved with the club along the way, which I’ll always be grateful for. Foothills has always supported me throughout my journey and have helped get me to where I am today. I’ve developed so much as a player and person at foothills.”
Signing an Exceptional Young Talent Contract
James’ EYT contract means he will be part of Cavalry’s roster while still under the age of 21, benefiting from a CPL initiative designed to give more opportunities to developing players. The three-year deal (with an optional fourth year) secures James’s future in Calgary, and Foothills couldn’t be more excited about what this means for the player’s career.
“I’m very grateful to have signed my first professional contract and begin this new chapter at such a special club,” said James, upon signing with Cavalry FC. “It’s truly an honour to be a part of Cavalry, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.”
Praise from Coaches and Mentors
James’s achievement has drawn praise from both his new professional coaches and those who guided him in his formative years. Tommy Wheeldon Jr., Cavalry FC’s Head Coach and General Manager, spoke highly of the young midfielder’s qualities. “James is a versatile midfielder that has a great feel for the game,” Wheeldon Jr. noted. “He possesses a strong mentality, covers ground well, and has a terrific range of passing. He’s been a top performer for our U21 team over the past two seasons and deserves this opportunity to turn professional.”
Foothills Academy Director, Lee Tucker, shared his excitement and pride in James’s accomplishment. “It has been a pleasure to see James progress through the program over the past few years. His development is a testament to the hard work and commitment he has shown in improving his game. James is an exciting talent with the potential to build an excellent professional career, and we wish him every success as he takes the next steps in his journey,” said Tucker. The entire Foothills family echoes these sentiments, congratulating James on his well-earned success.
James McGlinchey’s story is an inspiration to all young players in our club. It shows that with talent, dedication, and the right support system, the dream of turning professional can become a reality. As James embarks on this new chapter with Cavalry FC, we will be cheering him on every step of the way. We have no doubt he will flourish in the Canadian Premier League. Congratulations, James, and best of luck in your professional career!
