CALGARY, AB: June 8, 2024 –
The Calgary Foothills Men’s (FC) and Women’s (WFC) League1 Alberta teams traveled to Edmonton June 7 to take on the BTB Soccer Club (BTB) at Clarke Stadium. FC came home with their first win of the season, a 2-0 shutout. WFC lost 2-0.
FC’s game time was 7:45 p.m. The first half saw goals by Gianmarco Plenzik and Owen Antoniuk. The second half was scoreless for FC, but their solid defensive play kept BTB from getting on the board.
“We came into the game
focused on performance,” Head Coach Marc McLaren explained. “Controlling our work rate, duels, and reactions led us to 3 points. The team played very well, but we still have a lot of potential we haven’t tapped, which we will work to bring to the field next game.”
Several players had strong performances including Jack Hodnett, [pictured] the Wolverhampton Wanderers academy product who showed why he was brought over from England.
Results weren’t as positive for WFC who hit the pitch at 5:30 p.m. A penalty kick at the 39th minute gave BTB the lead, which they expanded on at the 72nd minute. Head Coach Colin Mackay expressed his disappointment in the result. “I’d describe tonight as a game of bad decisions. BTB wanted it more than we did and capitalized on our errors. Next week, we play St. Albert, who sit at the top of the standings, and we’ll be working to put together a starting lineup to be successful against them.” Mackay said there were some positives in the game, particularly from Layla Tarraf and Avril Jamieson.
The Foothills teams head north for another double-header on June 14 against the St. Albert Impact. Game times are 5:30 for WFC and 7:45 for FC at Riel 1.
