CALGARY, AB: May 8, 2025 –
Coming off wins in their season openers, Calgary Foothills Men’s (FC) and Women’s (WFC) League1 Alberta teams will face host Calgary Blizzard (Blizzard) on Friday, May 9, at the Shane Homes West Soccer Dome.
The action kicks off at 5:30 p.m. when WFC faces off against one of the top League1 programs in Canada. Head Coach Lee Tucker is anticipating a high-calibre contest. “We’re expecting a tough challenge. Blizzard is a well-organized, well-coached side, but we’re looking forward to the opportunity. Last year Blizzard topped the league standings with a 7-2-3 record and qualified for the League1 inter-provincial championship. Their roster has quality veteran players, such as Maggie Zacsko, Tori Martyn and Brooklyn Colvin as well as players from the University of Calgary, which is one of the top teams in Canada. This is sure to be an intense game and a natural rivalry, but matches like this are why we play.”
Avril Jamieson, a 2024 National Champion with our 2007 APDL Girls, is one Foothills player to watch in the night’s first match. A prolific goal scorer at the youth level, Avril made a big impact in our League1 win on May 2, netting two goals against a strong Callies United squad.
The second match of the doubleheader kicks off at 8:00 p.m., as our FC team steps onto the pitch for another high-stakes matchup against Blizzard. “They’re a very good side with depth and quality throughout their lineup, including former Cavalry FC players Moe El Gandour and William Omoreniye, supported by a squad of players from the University of Calgary,” says Head Coach Connor Brady. “But we are ready. These are the games we want — ones that push us, help us grow, and bring out the best in us. Friday night is shaping up to be a classic.”
Be sure to keep an eye on Hafiz Mahjor, a key playmaker for FC. A natural leader on the field, Hafiz brings vision, control, and creativity, setting the tempo and unlocking attacking opportunities with his precise distribution. “He’s a major asset in possession and will be key to unlocking our offensive threats,” adds Brady.
The May 9 matches will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Shane Home West Soccer Dome, 11014 Bearspaw Dam Rd NW, Calgary, Alberta.

League1 Alberta is the province of Alberta’s pro-am, standards-based senior league. It serves as a stepping stone between Alberta’s high-performance youth level, elite amateur, and professional levels. In 2023 (League1 Alberta’s inaugural year), Foothills FC capped off a dominant season by finishing first in the regular standings and winning the championship final against St. Albert Impact. In 2024, FC delivered another strong campaign but fell just short of back-to-back titles, losing a hard-fought final to Edmonton Scottish. Despite the setback, the team’s resilience, adaptability, and commitment to excellence stood out. Player development and team cohesion continue to advance, with the club maintaining a sharp focus on the growth of both athletes and coaches, laying a strong foundation for an exciting 2025 season. Foothills WFC competed in League1 Alberta in 2023 and 2024 as a development team for the Club’s Pro-Am program, which participated in the United Women’s Soccer League. During this time, our primary focus was on building our athletes’ skills and preparing them for higher levels of competition. Now, as we embrace new opportunities through the Northern Super League (NSL), we are setting our sights on dominating League1 Alberta in 2025. Our athletes are eager to showcase their growth, and we anticipate a strong season, fueled by ambition, talent, and preparation. The Foothills WFC League1 Alberta team is coached by Lee Tucker.
