CALGARY, AB: May 11, 2024 –
The Calgary Foothills Men’s (FC) and Women’s (WFC) League1 Alberta teams played host to the very strong St. Albert Impact Friday night. The Impact finished high in League1 in 2023 and showed their strength against our men’s and women’s teams, winning both games by a score of 3-1.
WFC started the double-header, kicking off at 5:30 p.m. The highly anticipated clash showcased a display of tactical prowess, determination, and moments of brilliance on the field. Despite WFC demonstrating a commendable possession game and a resolute defensive performance, their efforts were thwarted by a decline in quality in the final third and a vulnerability on set-pieces. In a game where every goal mattered, conceding three goals from four shots proved a significant challenge to overcome in this fiercely competitive league.
Head Coach Colin Mackay had this to say about the game and his team’s performance. “The result didn’t go our way for the second game in a row. We were the better team for most of the game, but conceding poor goals at this pro-am level is difficult to come back from. There were many positives in all areas of the field, but we need to score goals to win games.”
In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Grace Hannaford showcased her immense talent and versatility on the field, delivering a standout performance that left fans and spectators in awe. With her exceptional ability to impact the game offensively and defensively, Hannaford emerged as a pivotal figure, leaving an indelible mark on the match.
FC hit the field at 8:00 p.m. In a highly anticipated showdown, fans were treated to an intense and evenly balanced contest that showcased both teams’ competitive spirit and determination. Despite a valiant effort from FC, some costly errors ultimately proved decisive as St. Albert emerged victorious with a 3-1 win. “We conceded some poor goals, something that we need to rectify moving forward,” said Head Coach Marc McLaren after the game. “We have 2 weeks to prepare for our match against Calgary Blizzard, which is a critical game for us.”
There were some positive moments, including Owen Antonuik’s performance and impact. McLaren said, “Owen missed the first game due to a family commitment but was back and in top form for this match. You could see immediately the impact he had on the entire squad. He’s a top player and will be key for us moving forward.”
Both Foothills teams will play again on May 28th, hosting the Calgary Blizzard. WFC game time is 5:00 p.m. at Broadview Park, with FC following at 8:00 p.m. Tickets to the doubleheader will be available at the venue, or season tickets can be purchased here.
