Foothills Men Victorious Against Cavalry FC U21; Women Bow to ASA High Performance Team in League1 Alberta Play

CALGARY, AB: June 26, 2024 –

The Calgary Foothills Men (FC) gained another League 1 Alberta win last night, defeating Cavalry FC U21 by a score of 1-0. The Club’s Women’s team (WFC) wasn’t as successful, losing a 1-0 heartbreaker to the ASA High Performance squad.

FC kick-off was at 8:00, and despite gaining three points, Head Coach Marc McLaren felt it wasn’t the team’s best performance. “We can play better than we did tonight. We lost control on several occasions and will be working on that before our July 5 game against Edmonton Scottish. Unfortunately, Aidan Izadi sustained an injury late in the game, and we wish him a speedy recovery.”

Attacker Gareth Smith-Doyle scored FC’s only goal in the first half, but that was enough to secure the win. McLaren credits Smith-Doyle’s performance and the continued strong play of midfielder Rodane Cato with tonight’s success. “Cato has been a key player all season. He brings balance to the midfield, presses hard, wins balls back, and sets up plays consistently.”

McLaren, the team, and the Club all wish to extend their condolences to the family of former Foothills FC player Dylon Powley, who sadly passed away recently. “Dylon was a great player and friend to Foothills and the wider soccer community in Alberta and our thoughts are with his family and friends,” McLaren said.

Game time for WFC was 5:00 p.m. Head Coach Colin Mackay is disappointed that despite another top effort and strong play from the team, they didn’t bring home a win. “After a flat first half, we had a number of chances to score in the second that we just couldn’t finish. ASA has a couple of very strong players who shut our scorers down and were able to bury a goal when one of our girls sustained an injury.”

Midfielders Jayden Berg and Layla Tarraf had strong games for WFC. They both were driving forces behind the strong second-half performance.

Foothills has a home double-header on July 5 at Broadview Park against Edmonton Scottish, who sit at the top of the men’s division and in second place in the women’s. WFC game time is 5:00 p.m. FC hit the pitch at 8:00 p.m. Get your tickets here or at the gate.
