CALGARY, AB – It was a dramatic day of soccer for Calgary Foothills as the club travelled north for a League1 Alberta doubleheader against St. Albert Impact. WFC battled to a thrilling 3-2 win to maintain their position at the top of the table, while FC suffered a tough 1-0 loss conceding in stoppage time.
WFC 3 – 2 St. Albert Impact Women
WFC secured an important victory on the road Saturday with a 3-2 win in a top-of-the-table clash against St. Albert Impact.
Kendall Showers opened the scoring in just the 3rd minute, capitalizing on early pressure to give WFC the ideal start. The match stayed tight until the second half when Isabel Monck doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the 58th minute.
St. Albert responded quickly with a goal in the 72nd, but substitute Avril Jamieson restored the two-goal cushion just 10 minutes later. A late push by the home side saw them pull one back in stoppage time, but WFC held on to secure all three points.
“It was an excellent performance from the group, with every player playing an important role,” said Head Coach Lee Tucker. “The team showed their quality, determination and togetherness in what was a very tough game. Kendall Showers scored an excellent goal today and was voted player of the game. Isabel Monck was a dominant force in midfield alongside Brooklyn Blake and it was great to see our game changers Rachel Barlow, Emma Schneider, Abby Steen and Avril Jamieson all make huge contributions to the win. We now have a few days to prepare before heading back up to Edmonton to play another challenging opponent in BTB.”
The win keeps WFC at the summit of the League1 Alberta standings and underscores the team’s continued growth heading into the final stretch of the third season.
FC 0 – 1 St. Albert Impact Men
FC saw their unbeaten streak snapped in heartbreaking fashion after conceding a goal in the 94th minute in a hard-fought match.
Both sides traded chances in a physical, tightly contested game. Despite strong performances from the FC backline anchored once again by Caden Rogozinski and Max Bodurtha St. Albert found a breakthrough in stoppage time through Rodane Cato.
“We improved as the game went on,” said Head Coach Connor Brady. “We made some adjustments to our tactics at half which saw us play a much more direct brand of football. We had them on the back foot for the majority of the second half and were unfortunate not to score. That being said, we understand where we are in the table and need to make good on our chances in order to collect three important points against quality opponents. This one will take a day or two to get over as I felt we deserved more out of the match, but we will review, reflect and go again.”
FC remains in the playoff hunt and will look to rebound in their upcoming fixtures.
