They are one step closer to the end. 

Foothills WFC defeated the Eastern conference champions of the United Women’s Soccer National League, the Lancaster (Pennsylvania) Inferno, 2-0 on Saturday to take the penultimate step toward the league title.

After an up and down first half, the team found goals in the second 45 from Tanya Boychuk and Alex Lamontagne to secure the win and advance to face the L.A. Galaxy OC Women. A familiar foe who defeated the Midwest conference champions, the Indiana Union, 5-1 earlier in the day.

On a through ball from Sarah Kinzner, Boychuk, who had just returned from a friendly tour with team Canada’s under-20 squad, struck the ball on a partial breakaway that was stopped by Lancaster’s keeper, Kelly O’Brien, but she pounced on the rebound to open the scoring. After she was swarmed by family, friends, and young admirers after the final whistle, Tanya said it was a great team performance when they need it most.

“We are super excited. We had chances in the beginning (of the second half) and we needed someone to put one away to really change the momentum.”

Head Coach of Foothills WFC Troye Flannery said while the first 15 minutes were great, they looked a little heavy legged later in the first half. Foothills WFC was outshot 4-1 before halftime.

“We had a week off and we looked like it. We reset at the half, talked about our habits, our game plan and what we wanted to do.”

“Tanya is a special player, she had her legs, and had a good powerful finish. It was a professional performance in the second half.”

The next and final opponent will be a familiar one for Foothills WFC in the Galaxy. Three goals in the opening semifinals came from NCAA player of the year Catarina Macario while former U.S. women’s national team star Natasha Kai along with midfielders Jordan Marada and Taylor Kornieck each had singles.  Foothills WFC haven’t lost in four all time matches in the lifetime series but according to Flannery, L.A. is always a tough opponent.

“They are a fantastic team. They have added some new pieces for this weekend, some absolutely class players. We have to prepared for that and get our players focused on the next task.”

Foothills WFC has been operating in Calgary and competing in the United Women’s Soccer National league, competing in the Western Conference since 2017. Last season, Foothills captured the Western regular season title and travelled to Michigan for the 2018 nationals where they lost to the eventual champions, the Houston Aces in the semifinal. The league was formed late in 2015 under the belief that there was a gap in the development of the female soccer player between the collegiate game and the professional & international game.

A dedicated Tier 2 league was needed. UWS will fill that gap with a summer competitive season that will help the collegiate player evolve & enhance their game for fall competition while giving the post-collegiate player a chance to further develop for the professional & international ranks.
