Goals, Growth, and Good Times in Vegas for 2012 WFC Girls

The Calgary Foothills 2012 WFC Girls recently embarked on an unforgettable journey to Las Vegas, where the team participated in the Surf Cup Southwest, competing in the Gold Medal Group (called Best of the Southwest). The trip was not just about the competition and gaining experience on the field; it was a whirlwind of fun, team building, and the forging of lifelong friendships. Special shout-out to Sandi Huynh for the phenomenal photos she took. Be sure to scroll to the end to see just some of the great shots she captured.

On the Field

The competition was of the highest quality, but the sportsmanship displayed throughout was truly inspiring. Our girls took to the field with determination and grit, surprising even their coaches, Alan Stiff and Vince Oliverio, with their exceptional performance. Despite this being one of their first experiences playing 11v11 football, they held their own against some formidable teams.

Results:

  • A 1-1 tie with California Elite 64
  • A 2-2 tie with Hawaii Academy
  • A 4-0 loss to Las Vegas Surf ENCL

Beyond the on-field action, the camaraderie among the teammates was phenomenal to see, as the girls celebrated each other’s success with genuine enthusiasm.

Coach Alan Stiff couldn’t have been prouder, expressing his admiration for the girls’ performance and the compliments they received from other teams. Coach Alan said, “This tournament was more than just a series of matches. It was a chance for our players to test their mettle against challenging opposition and gain invaluable experience on the international stage; they left an impression on everyone they came up against. It is a pleasure coaching these very talented young ladies. I am so proud and fortunate to be able to work with them.”

Off the Field

The team had a blast exploring Las Vegas, capturing memories that will last a lifetime. From team dinners to sightseeing adventures, every moment contributed to strengthening the bonds between the teammates.

Moving Forward

As the team looks forward to their provincial qualification game later this month, they carry with them the lessons learned and friendships cemented in Las Vegas. This trip was a stepping stone in their individual journeys, and we can’t wait to see what they achieve next.

The tournament wasn’t just about winning; it was about the girls pushing themselves against the best, pushing themselves to their limits, learning from opponents, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

This is “the Foothills Way.”
