Calgary, AB – After an intense and exciting season, the Foothills WFC travelled to LA this past weekend to play their final regular season game vs. LA Galaxy OC Women. The game had a lot on the line, as both teams were fighting to earn their spot in the National Championships. The Foothills sat top of the table, and the LA Galaxy was right behind the Canadian team. A win would guarantee the Foothills a first-place finish in the Western Conference. Anything less and their fate would be determined by the results of the rest of the teams in the following weekends set of games.
The game started off fairly even, with both teams creating a few goal scoring opportunities. In the 13th minute, midfielder Jessie Jones opened up the score for the Foothills off of a perfect ball over the top from captain Yvonne Northover. Soon after, Alex Lamontagne added to the score in the 43rd minute making it 2-0 for the WFC. The second half remained scoreless, and the Foothills WFC were named Western Conference Champs!
Coach Troye Flannery was ecstatic about the win, considering it was only the teams second season in the League. “It’s an unbelievable feeling. I’m very proud of all of the players. I’m happy for the club and grateful for all the support back home. LA is a very good team, so we came with a plan and stuck to it. The game changers were flying, Mya and Lauren came into the game at the right time, the 11 were superb and inspired. Our experienced players were difference makers from the start.”
The team now has two weeks to prepare for the final four which will be held in Detroit, Michigan on July 20th-22nd.
