Keelyn and Taegan Stewart’s Impressive Skills Earn them Berths on the Wales U19 Team and the Calgary Wild FC

Foothills alumni Taegan and Keelyn Stewart were just announced as new members of the Calgary Wild FC, but they are also leaving their mark in Europe, where they play for the Wales U19 team. The teens traveled to Europe in October, where they played for Wales in Portugal in final preparation for the 2024/25 UEFA Euro Qualifying campaign.

They will return to the team’s camp in Porto later this month, where they will play against Portugal, Poland, and Finland.

We caught up with the dynamic duo to hear more about their time in Wales.

What was your favourite “OFF the pitch” memory of the trip?

Watching the Wales first team play against Slovakia. We all gathered in the lobby of the hotel and watched the game together as a team. It was great to see other people who are as passionate about football and love watching the game. Ever since we were young we have loved watching soccer, so being able to be on a team where others share the same passion was amazing.

What did you learn from your Welsh coaches that other Foothills players would benefit from?

The importance of asking questions when you are unsure of your responsibilities or positioning during a match. Being in a new environment includes having to learn some new set pieces and tactics as well as playing in different positions. Support from the coaching staff and with having the ability and encouragement to ask questions, we were able to better understand what the coaches expected from us and what our responsibilities were.

We also learned of the importance of building connections with our teammates. We had never met any of the girls we were playing with before, but we were encouraged by the coaches to come out of our shell and keep in contact with the girls in order to continue developing relationships with them off the field, which will help when we play on the field.  The environment the coaches and support staff created was excellent and inclusive.

Were there any particular aspects of Foothills training that helped you get to this point in your career?

Foothills has put us into challenging environments and pushed us in every training session. The coaches and staff have helped develop our skills and technical ability while working closely with us to improve our fitness. All the coaches at Foothills were supportive of us and have helped us become the players we are today.

Anything you would like to add?

We really enjoyed our time with the team: both the coaching staff and the girls were amazing!  Loved every minute of it and learned a whole lot from the girls.

Thank you, ladies! Best of luck playing with Wales and the Wild!
