Born in Calgary in 2005, Michael Harms is one of Canadian soccer’s brightest defenders. His journey reflects both Calgary’s strong grassroots system and Cavalry FC’s developmental vision.
Michael developed his skills in Calgary Foothills Soccer Club’s youth program. By 2022, at just 16, he was already attracting attention. Cavalry FC signed him to a developmental contract, giving him a taste of first-team life while he logged over 1,000 minutes with the Cavalry U20s in the Alberta Major Soccer League. He also represented Team Alberta at the 2022 Canada Summer Games.
In 2023, Michael’s progression accelerated when he signed his first pro contract. Reflecting on the moment, he said: “I’m very excited to be signing a professional contract with Cavalry FC… This has been a dream of mine and I’m very grateful for this opportunity.”
Head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. praised Michael’s attitude and versatility: “Michael is a young player with high potential and a strong mentality… a dynamic defender that provides a lot of energy and speed and is technically proficient.” Those qualities soon translated into playing time, as Michael began featuring with both the first team in the Canadian Premier League and Cavalry’s U21 side in League1 Alberta.
The highlight of his young career came in 2024, when Michael was part of the Cavalry squad that lifted the Canadian Premier League Championship. His role as a developing full-back gave him valuable experience in a title-winning environment. In January 2025, Cavalry rewarded his growth by exercising the option on his contract, securing him for another season as he continued to mature into a reliable professional.
Michael Harms’ path reflects a model that Foothills champions: nurturing local players through youth setups, U20 and U21 competition, and into first-team football. From Foothills’ youth pitches to the CPL’s biggest stages, he has embraced every challenge.
