Basir Saleh is an Academy Trainer with Foothills, working with players in our Youth Club and Academy environments to help them build strong habits on and off the ball. He is part of the club’s growing pool of specialist trainers who support team coaches by delivering high-quality sessions across multiple age groups.
A seasoned coach with over 20 years of experience, Basir brings a successful track record coaching across all tiers in CUSA (including Majors) and in CMSA (from Timbits through to U19). His international experience includes serving as head coach of the Canadian contingent for the IFA7 at the 2016 Copa America Men’s tournament, as well as leading the BU18 Copa America Rising Stars 2024 team. As a head coach for IFA7 CANADA, he has prepared teams for international competition and delivered technical development sessions for member clubs within CMSA.
Beyond his coaching role, Basir is active in the wider Calgary community. He has been recognized as a distinguished leader and is a recipient of the 2022 Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal for making significant contributions to the province. His leadership attributes feed into his coaching philosophy at Foothills: creating a welcoming, high-standard environment where young players feel seen, supported, and pushed to grow as people as well as players.
On the training pitch, Basir is known for calm, clear communication and a focus on fundamentals done well (first touch, decision-making, and work rate) while encouraging players to express themselves and take ownership of their development. As part of the Foothills staff group, he shares in the club’s commitment to long-term player development and to using soccer as a vehicle for confidence, character, and opportunity.
