Foothills has a new partnership with Vivo Cura Health that will provide our members with faster access to injury assessment and care. This will be crucial in getting our players back on the pitch sooner and more safely.
Our new “injury intake process” will allow players and their coaches and guardians rapid access to the right healthcare professionals to have injuries assessed and create treatment plans coordinated with Foothills’ Sports Science department.
Faster Assessment
and Treatment
A major reason we sought this type of partnership was to ensure the Sports Science department is well informed of player health along their recovery path. We needed to actively work with experienced sports medicine experts on return-to-play plans and identified Vivo Cura as the best choice.
Foothills Head of Sports Science, Chase Wetherell, is excited about what this means for our players and their families. “We did a test pilot in the summer and had great results. Vivo Cura and its staff were instrumental in helping us assess and treat injuries that occurred in the League1 Alberta and UWS League seasons, as well as on our run to PDP Nationals for our APDL teams. Serious injuries such as breaks, or ligament damage require immediate emergency care. All Foothills staff and coaches are trained in how to handle these appropriately. However, for less serious injuries this new process helps ensure players are assessed and treated faster than through traditional actions that have often meant hours spent in hospital waiting rooms or trying to get in to see their family doctor. Now you just click the link to our self-referral intake form, answer a few questions, and hit submit. All data is encrypted to ensure data privacy. Within 48 hours, Vivo Cura members will review the case and devise the best action plan.”
Putting a Plan in Place to Get Athletes Back on the Field Faster and More Safely
Dr. Hafeez Kurji, Director of Sport Medicine at Vivo Cura has already been working closely with Foothills and our players. He says, “Our collaboration with Foothills has been exceptional. Working closely with the coaches and athletic therapists ensures players are seen quickly so we can address their injuries and get them back on the field where they belong. What sets us apart in Calgary is our ability to provide not only expert clinical insights into a player’s injury but also access to a team of highly trained physiotherapists specializing in sport-related injuries. Combined with in-house services like bracing, and image-guided injections for pain control, we minimize delays and deliver comprehensive care to help players return to play as efficiently and safely as possible.”
Fabricio Nucci, Director of Physiotherapy at Vivo Cura
, agrees that rapid access to critical services is key to a safe return. He says, “Waiting to be seen by someone who can effectively assess an injury can make recovery more complicated than necessary. Both our physiotherapy and sport med teams can provide quick access to their services, and because we work so closely together, we can more efficiently leverage our respective skill sets to ensure athletes have the care they need when they need it. We can deliver optimal and efficient care that supports recovery, enhances performance, and keeps players at their best both on and off the field.”
Vivo Cura’s Approach to Treating Muscle, Bone, and Joint Pain
Vivo Cura’s goal is to empower people with muscle, bone, and joint pain to get back to doing what they love. To prevent delays in care so frequently experienced in our healthcare system, they’ve grown a team of specialized physicians, physiotherapists, athletic therapists, and nurses who work together to provide integrated access to the services that are most often required, which they can offer in-house. When our injured athletes attend Vivo Cura Health, they will avoid unnecessary delays, allowing them to return to play more quickly.
To access the clinic, players, parents of players, coaches, and athletic therapists can go to the website and click “Become a Patient,” where they’ll find an option to fill out an intake form for the “Acute Injury Clinic.” Upon receipt, their team will contact the player within 1 business day to schedule an appointment with a sport medicine professional. Coaches and Athletic therapists have also been provided cards with QR codes that will take them to the same place.
