After an hour of control, but two slipups, Foothills FC came away with a weekend split against the Seattle Sounders U23 academy in USL league two action.
A 2-0 loss concluded their debut weekend at Mount Royal University on a pair of goals from the Sounders U23’s Pablo DeCastro on Sunday afternoon.
Foothillls FC head coach Leon Hapgood said for the first hour, it was a much-improved performance with the ball (compared to Friday).
“Then we gave away an awful goal from a penalty, from then onwards we lost our way.”
On a tremendous run down the left side of the 18 yard box, Sounders U23 forward Shakeem Adams, who’d had great pressure prior to that, was hauled down inside the line. DeCastro stepped up to take the penalty kick, which he converted in the 63rd minute.
In the 81st minute, Foothills FC defender Euan Bauld took down the Sounders U23’s Matthew Carnefix just in front the of the penalty area, creating a free kick that managed to get through a five-man wall and Ben Jackson. DeCastro’s effort was so stunning that many Foothills FC players stood in utter shock for several seconds.
“We made some key subs, chased the game a little bit. Then we conceded a free kick through the wall for the second goal. It was two moments,” Hapgood concluded about his team’s performance in the second half.
After totaling up all the game action in the Northwest Division from the weekend, Foothills FC is still on top. Only one team from each division automatically qualifies for the USL2’s playoff bracket, while the others have to chase the one remaining wild card.
Hapgood, while disappointed with the day’s result, is reassured that his team has been at the top of the table since night one of the season. Their current record sits at 4-2-2
“For a team on a complete rebuild and being top of the league for four consecutive weeks, we have to be happy.
“The boys have been going hard since April 15th, and travelled a lot as well. We will give them time to reflect and rest and hit reset as we enter the second part of the season.”
Two long undefeated streaks came to a close with the defeat. Foothills FC had previously won 11 in a row against the Sounders U23 team in the lifetime series. Also, Foothills FC’s run at home ended after 47 months of only wins and draws.
The club are in a 12 day break before a trip to Victoria to face the improved Highlanders. Their final home series of 2019 will also be against Victoria on July 12th and 14th.
