CALGARY, AB: June 19, 2024 –
The Calgary Foothills Men’s (FC) and Women’s (WFC) League1 Alberta teams were victorious against Calgary rivals Callies United last night at the Calgary West Soccer Centre. Both teams secured 4-1 wins after joint 0-0 draws in their first matchup of the season on May 7.
FC hit the pitch at 5:30. “We came in determined to keep the momentum of our last two wins going,” said Head Coach Marc McLaren after the game. “I knew we could expect something special from Gareth Smith-Doyle, which is exactly what he delivered, scoring a hat trick. Owen Antoniuk continues to have a strong season and scored another goal to help us with the win.”
Attacker Smith-Doyle returned to FC after spending time in the CPL with Cavalry FC. A Calgary native, he has his sights set on bringing home the League1 championship for a second time. As evidenced tonight, his skills make him a force to be reckoned with.
WFC game time was 8:00 p.m. Head Coach Colin Mackay had this to say. “The girls were outstanding tonight. They executed the tactical plan we set up perfectly. I have to give a special shoutout to Ruth Adekugbe. This was her first game back after an ACL injury, and she scored the fourth goal. Ruth is a big part of the Foothills family and the Calgary soccer community. Her return is a lift to the entire team.”
Along with Adekugbe, Cheyenne Lehmann and Foothills Academy players Avril Jamieson and Reese Kincaid also scored. Mackay continued, “We had solid performances from many players apart from our goal scorers, including our entire back line. Brooklyn Colvin, Grace Hannaford, Olivia Kranjcec, Julie Randall, and Jaden Tomaszewski were all outstanding tonight.”
Both Foothills teams will play on June 25 at the Macron Performance Centre. WFC will take on the ASA High Performance Team at 5:00 p.m., and FC will meet Cavalry FCU21 at 8:00 p.m.
