Calgary, AB – Calgary Foothills WFC (Foothills) maintained their place at the top of the United Women’s Soccer (UWS) standings edging out Santa Clarita Blue Heat (SC Blue Heat) 1-0 in a tight match-up Saturday afternoon at Broadview Park. Both sides evenly played the first half of the game. SC Blue Heat was the first to strike at the six-minute mark with two offensive chances. The first was a slippery pass played right onto the penalty spot for SC Blue Heat forward to finish, and the second was a top corner strike from outside the 18-yard box. Foothills goalkeeper, Mabel Dunn, came up with two huge saves to keep the score at 0-0. Seven minutes later, Foothills replied with their own wave of offense when midfielder Momo Nakao sailed the ball just over the crossbar, then again when she slid the ball across the box where Kaylee Hunter just missed the tap-in. SC Blue Heat’s closest chance came in the 25th minute when they had a wide-open net but Foothills defender, Grace Stordy, saved it off the goal line with her chest. After a few non-threatening chances for the rest of the first, a break for Foothills finally came in the 44th minute when they were awarded a penalty shot. Nakao stepped up to take it and made no mistake putting the ball in the bottom left corner of the goal, leaving Foothills up 1-0 at the end of the half.
Shortly into the second, Foothills were awarded two free kicks, both of which they were unable to convert. However, Foothills commanded control for most of the second half with another chance coming at the 63–minute mark where Nakao successfully took on four SC Blue Heat players at the top of the box and then flicked the ball to Emma Nicholson to finish, but she was just edged out by the SC Blue Heat defense. Foothills’ last close chance came at the 75th minute where an offensive corner kick was fumbled by the SC Blue Heat goalkeeper and landed at the feet of Foothills forward Andersen Williams, who narrowly missed scoring. The rest of the second stayed tightly matched but Foothills was able to hold on for the 1-0 win.
Foothills’ latest display was a team effort. Although individual efforts were evident, it was the unity of this team that lead to another 3 points. Midfielder, Sarah Kinzner commented, “I thought it was an awesome team performance. It was definitely a battle out there. There were some big time plays by Mabel stepping up in net. She played awesome. And Momo had an exceptional performance.”
The team mindset was seconded by goalkeeper, Mabel Dunn, who said, “I think we played really well together as a unit. We moved it up the field. We stayed strong on defense in the second half. We were calm, we played our game, and we came out with the result we wanted.”
Foothills’ next match will be an away game on Thursday, June 22 versus Los Angeles SC. The game will take place at Masters University kicking-off at 5:00 PM PDT.

About United Women’s Soccer (UWS) League
UWS is a national pro-am league composed of professionally operated clubs within the United States and Canada. UWS provides high-level competition for college players, aspiring and former professionals, and international stars. The overarching goal of this league is to achieve equality of opportunity for women’s soccer. In a time when there are several professional and amateur leagues for men’s soccer across North America, a huge gap exists between the college and professional ranks on the women’s side. UWS fills that gap by providing a pathway to pro for the amateur player.
