CALGARY, AB: July 5, 2025: Foothills FC and WFC emerged victorious in their respective matchups on July 4, each securing a 1-0 win in front of an energized home crowd at Broadview Park. The results come at a critical moment in the League1 Alberta season, with both teams preparing for a must-win doubleheader at home on Tuesday, July 8.
In official league play, FC edged out Cavalry FC U21 thanks to a composed team effort and a decisive goal by Jamie Nicholson. The match lived up to expectations, showcasing many of the top soccer talents in Alberta on both squads.
“Games like that demand focus and maturity,” said FC Head Coach Connor Brady. “Our players executed the game plan well. The difference was in our speed, strength, and the way we managed the pressure. Jamie took his opportunity brilliantly, Max Bodurtha was excellent again, and Sam Diltz continues to be solid and reliable in goal.”
Diltz’s clean sheet was his latest in a string of shutouts, while the backline held strong to secure all three points. The win moves FC into a tie for first place with Edmonton BTB, just one point ahead of St. Albert Impact and Calgary Blizzard in a razor-thin race at the top of the standings.
In an earlier exhibition match, WFC also recorded a 1-0 victory over Calgary Wild FC U21, with a strong defensive showing and sharp execution.
“We were pleased to have maintained possession for long periods in the game and created opportunities for players to get more time on the pitch together. The game also provided a chance to bring in some players from the Foothills’ pathway. Ava Savery and Isabella Langelli came up from our AMSL team, as well as a couple of our top youth players, Kaci Bzeta and Madison Dwyer,” said WFC Head Coach Lee Tucker. “We now head into a key week, with two tough games, that will go a long way to determining where we may finish at the end of the season.”
All Eyes on Tuesday, July 8: A Critical Doubleheader to Keep Both Teams at the Top of the Standings
The stakes could not be higher for both squads as they return to League1 Alberta play on Tuesday, July 8 for a home doubleheader at Macron Performance Centre against the Calgary Villains.
At 5:00 p.m., WFC begins a matchup that will impact our postseason result. With very few games left in the regular season, the standings are tight. WFC is tied with St. Albert Impact and holds a narrow one-point edge over Calgary Blizzard. A win on Tuesday could give us a critical edge in the playoff race.
Then at 7:30 p.m., FC will look to maintain momentum in their battle for top spot in the men’s division. They currently sit tied with Edmonton BTB, one point ahead of both St. Albert Impact and Calgary Blizzard. Every point matters, and a strong performance Tuesday could create much-needed separation in a four-way title chase.
“We’re coming off another strong team performance and another clean sheet,” said Brady. “Having only conceded one goal in our last five games is a testament to our group coming together and our commitment to using each day to get better. After an unlucky start to the season where it felt like we didn’t get any bounces and were up against some bad luck, we have put ourselves right in the thick of the race in a very tight group. We have treated our last handful of matches like cup finals, understanding we need to win to achieve our goal. Tuesday’s match is another big one and a chance for us to make another statement with a quality team performance. Bringing home 3 points keeps us in the running for a League1 title.”
“Added WFC’s Tucker, “Villains have shown well this season and are a well-organized, hard-working group. We will have to be at our best to get the 3 points. We are looking for our more senior leaders, such as Kendall Showers, Rachel Barlow and Jayden Berg, to drive the team forward and get us over the line”.
