CALGARY, AB: May 10, 2024 –
Calgary Foothills Men’s (FC) and Women’s (WFC) League1 Alberta teams host a doubleheader on Friday, May 10, against St. Albert Impact (Impact) at the Macron Performance Centre. Impact is expected to be a tough opponent again this year, having performed well in both divisions in 2023.
WFC kicks off at 5:30 p.m. and is pumped up to best last year’s champions. Head Coach Colin Mackay says, “We learned a lot from our draw on May 7 and will take those season opener learnings into a very tough game against the Impact. We were hoping for 3 points but will take the 1 point and move on with Friday’s preparation.”
Goalkeeper Sarah Bach will be in the net on May 10 after leading the team to a shut-out in its game earlier this week. Bach is playing up from our Foothills Academy (2007), and that choice has already paid off. Providing opportunities for our younger athletes to play at a higher level helps them progress on their soccer pathway, and Bach is making the most of the opportunity.
FC takes the field at 8:00 p.m. The 2023 League1 Alberta Champions are also coming off a draw in their season opener. Despite excellent attacking and scoring opportunities throughout that match, they were unsuccessful in getting on the scoreboard. “We can’t make the basic mistakes we made in the May 7 match,” says Head Coach Marc McLaren. Sterling Kerr did his job in game one; now it’s time for the rest of the squad to do the same.”
Kerr is a Calgary native and returning player, having played with FC in 2022. He is also a student at Mount Royal University, where he plays for the MRU Cougars. He says, “I play for Foothills because of its culture of success and history of advancing players to play at the next level. I want to use my past experience to fuel myself and the team to compete at an elite level in every game and contend for a League1 title this season.”
The May 10 matches will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Macron Performance Centre, 111 Exploration Avenue, Calgary, Alberta. Tickets to the doubleheader will be available at the door, or season tickets can be purchased here.
