CALGARY, AB – After a successful two-game road trip, Foothills WFC returns home June 11th to host FC Arizona in their next United Women’s Soccer (‘UWS’) game. On June 3rd, FC Arizona hosted Foothills WFC for a strong match-up with great displays from both sides, ending in a 3-1 victory for Foothills.
FC Arizona is based in Phoenix, Arizona and joined UWS in 2022. Club Girls Director of Coaching, Tara Koleski is the Head Coach. The team holds the third position in the Western Conference with a 1-1-0 record.
Foothills Head Coach, Lee Tucker, expects an exciting game Sunday. “After a challenging road trip, where we picked up 2 excellent wins, we are excited to be back at home for the next two weekends and look forward to another packed crowd at Broadview on Sunday when we host a highly competitive team in FC Arizona. We know that we will have to be at our best to come out with another 3 points and stay at the top of the Western Conference.”
Izzy Monck, an 18-year-old forward, and one of the youngest players on the Foothills WFC team, played a pivotal role in recent games. Monck netted a beautiful header to open scoring against FC Arizona on June 3rd. She then sealed the team’s victory with a left footed shot from 20 yards out. Monck showcased her skills in 2022 on the Canadian U17 National Team in the U17 World Cup and Concacaf World Cup Qualifiers. She also helped bring her team at University of Memphis to an AAC Championship in 2022. As Calgary Foothills continues to develop their pathway to pro for young players, Monck is positioned to be a standout talent in the coming years.
Another top performance for Foothills came from midfielder, Lara Kazandjian. Kazandjian was named to the All Conference UWS First Team in 2022 and excels on the field at Creighton University, where she earned a spot on the 2022 All Big East First Team. Kazandjian’s international experience includes playing for the Canadian national teams at the U15, U17, and U20 levels. In addition, Kazandjian has played for the Armenian National Senior team, allowing her to showcase her talent internationally and contribute to the development of soccer in Armenia.
Kazandjian says, “I’m very excited to be a part of the team this year and be in a high-level training environment. I’m hoping to inspire Canada’s youth players by winning a UWS championship.”
Calgary Foothills continues to develop their pathway to pro for women in Canada through their participation in the UWS league and as a founding franchise of Project 8 Sports Inc. (‘Project 8’). The Foothills women advanced to the UWS National finals twice. The first time was in 2019 when we hosted the National Championship in Calgary in front of 1,500 fans at Mount Royal University. The final was against Los Angeles Galaxy Soccer Club, which edged them out in a close final 1-0, with the winning goal coming from current Olympique Lyonnais and USA star Catarina Macario.
2022 was a record-breaking season, with the team winning all its conference games and entering the National Championship with a 100% (10-0-0) winning record. About United Women’s Soccer (UWS) League
UWS is a national pro-am league composed of professionally operated clubs within the United States and Canada. UWS provides high-level competition for college players, aspiring and former professionals, and international stars. The overarching goal of this league is to achieve equality of opportunity for women’s soccer. In a time when there are several professional and amateur leagues for men’s soccer across North America, a huge gap exists between the college and professional ranks on the women’s side. UWS fills that gap by providing a pathway to pro for the amateur player.
