Charlotte Potts’ football journey spans stints in England, Scotland, Switzerland, and Canada before returning home to spearhead the rise of Newcastle United Women.
Born in Gateshead, Charlotte came through Newcastle United’s youth system and broke into the first team as a teenager in 2011. Her early development was supplemented by experiences abroad, including with Calgary Foothills, where she grew in confidence and physicality. Charlotte’s determination and adaptability soon made her a player capable of excelling both in midfield and defence.
Her first major leap came when she joined Sunderland AFC Women, during which she enjoyed multiple spells that built her reputation as a reliable, hardworking professional. From there, she embraced a new challenge in the Scottish Women’s Premier League with Hibernian, signing in July 2020. Hibs manager Dean Gibson praised her athleticism and physical presence, and she quickly became a fixture in their backline.
In 2021, Charlotte returned to Sunderland. Her courage was matched by her performances, before she opted for a new adventure abroad with FF Lugano 1976 in Switzerland in early 2022.
That same year, Charlotte came full circle, signing again for Newcastle United Women in October 2022. The timing aligned with a transformative period for the club, as Newcastle was investing in its women’s team with professional ambition. Charlotte’s experience and leadership became invaluable as the Magpies surged to back-to-back promotions, first from FA WNL Division 1 North in 2022–23, then as champions of the FA WNL Northern Premier in 2023–24. She contributed five goals in 27 appearances during the title-winning campaign and helped Newcastle reach the FA WNL Cup Final in 2024.
Charlotte’s influence extends beyond the pitch. In June 2025, she was inducted into the Show Racism the Red Card Hall of Fame, a recognition of her commitment to equality and anti-discrimination work. Even after a lengthy injury layoff, she made her comeback in September 2025. Newcastle head coach Becky Langley celebrated her return, highlighting her resilience and importance to the squad.
Charlotte Potts embodies the values of Newcastle United Women: determination, professionalism, and community. Her journey — from Gateshead to Hibs, Sunderland, Lugano, and back to St. James’ Park — is a testament to persistence and passion, inspiring both her teammates and the next generation.
