CALGARY, AB: July 9, 2025: The League1 Alberta playoff picture came into sharper focus Tuesday night at Macron Performance Centre as both Foothills WFC and FC delivered commanding performances over the Calgary Villains to remain top contenders in their respective divisions.
In the women’s match, WFC earned a dominant 3-0 victory. From the opening whistle, the team dictated the tempo, generated scoring chances, and kept the Villains on the back foot. Goals from Grace Hannaford, Avril Jamieson, and Emma Schneider sealed the win, while Sarah Bach recorded yet another clean sheet. The backline featuring Nadia Colon, Abby Steen, Myla Schneider, and Annika Odinga stood tall throughout, and the midfield, led by Jayden Berg and Brooklyn Blake, was relentless in possession and transition.
“The group was excellent from start to finish. We had to show a lot of patience against a well-organized team. Our ability to control the tempo of the game allowed us to create numerous opportunities. said Head Coach Lee Tucker. “I thought our senior players really led the way, and our depth showed. It’s a great result to build on heading into Friday.”
In the men’s match, FC delivered a 4-0 win over the Villains. The squad showed maturity and patience, stringing together their most complete performance of the season. Goals from Harvey Hughes, Malcolm Rektor, Charles Nana, and Hafiz Mahjor punctuated a match defined by smart ball movement and disciplined team defending. Keeper Sam Diltz notched another shutout as the team continues its ascent in the standings.
“We’ve really turned a corner,” said Head Coach Connor Brady. “That was a professional performance—mature, efficient, and composed. We’re starting to get the bounces that eluded us early in the season, and more importantly, we’re earning them with the way we’re playing.”
With Tuesday’s wins, both teams remain in the hunt for a League1 Alberta title. WFC remains neck-and-neck with St. Albert Impact, while FC remains in the running in a division that will come down to performance in final regular season play.
Friday, July 11: Foothills Hosts Edmonton Scottish in Another Crucial Doubleheader
The race continues Friday night at home as FC and WFC host Edmonton Scottish in a pair of must-watch matchups. The women take the field at 5:00 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30 p.m. at Macron Performance Centre.
Both Scottish squads have had a tough season so far. They will be looking to prove they are much stronger than their standings indicate, and they will deliver a tough test for Foothills.
Coach Brady is looking forward to Friday. “We have to approach every game like a league final. We have done well to do that in the last handful of matches, and it’s getting us results. The Scottish team is very good and takes a lot of pride in the badge. They are defending league champions, which means they know how to win the important games. This is a good test for us to prove to ourselves that we are as good as we believe we are and can be. It will take another united performance, but we’re looking forward to having another game against the defending champs.”
On the women’s side, Coach Tucker added, “Scottish are a young, energetic group that are very good in transition. We will need to be well-organized throughout and take any opportunities that we can create. It’s another home game for us and we look forward to showing well in front of our supporters.”
