Spotlight on Stuart Lindsay: A Recipe for Player Growth

Stuart Lindsay’s soccer story started the way it does for many kids: on a local town team at about eight years old. He played semi-pro until U18 before his passion for the game began to shift from playing to coaching.

In Salisbury, in the south of England, Stuart immersed himself in coaching, working at a local leisure centre while earning his qualifications. He became the youngest person to earn his Level 2 coaching badge (a significant accomplishment), eventually adding a UEFA B license, the full FA Youth Award, and futsal qualifications. His résumé includes time with academies such as Wiltshire Regional Talent Centre and Matt Le Tissier Natural Coaching.

Life off the pitch was just as full. Stuart is also a professional baker and hands-on dad. “I was working nights in the bakery and then coaching during the day,” he laughs. “It kept me in the game even when I wasn’t playing anymore.” At the same time, his personal life blossomed. He and his wife, Sam, built a busy family life — four kids, two dogs — with soccer always at the centre.

In 2022 and 2023, the family visited Calgary to see Sam’s relatives. By the second trip, they made a big decision: Stuart was offered and accepted a position as a baker and the family relocated. “Calgary just felt like the right place for all of us,” he says.

Why Foothills Feels Like Home

Foothills came onto the Lindsay family radar through a friend of Sam’s family, whose child was in the Grassroots program.

“Soccer is a huge part of our family, so getting the kids involved early was really important,” Stuart explains. “From the beginning, Foothills made us all feel very welcome. There was just a good feeling about the place.”

He first joined as a parent, then began coaching as the club learned more about his background. By 2025, he had traded in baking for a full-time role at Foothills.

A Foothills Family in Every Sense

If you spend time at Foothills facilities, you’re likely to bump into a Lindsay.

Owen and Harvey play with the men’s group; May plays with the U15 Tier 1 girls; and Charlie plays U12 Tier 1. “We all spend a lot of time at the facilities,” Stuart jokes. “But I like that. It means I’m seeing things through the lens of a coach and a parent. It influences my personal life and my professional one.”

Sam is also a familiar face in the office as Foothills’ Administrative Manager. Often the first point of contact for new families, she shares Stuart’s belief that every interaction should feel welcoming and player-focused. Having been deeply involved in soccer back in England, she brings a calm, competent presence to the front line of the club’s operations.

That full-family connection shapes how Stuart sees his role. “At the end of the day, these are people’s kids,” he says. “I always try to think, ‘What would I want for my own children in this environment?’”

Leading the Foundation & Development Phase

Now serving as Technical Lead for the Foothills Foundation and Development phases, Stuart oversees the U11–U12 boys’ and girls’ programs.

“There’s admin, planning, and checking in with staff during the day,” he says. “From about 3:30, it’s almost all on-field: men’s sessions, academy sessions, and I’m head coach for the 2011 APDL boys. There’s a lot of variety.”

Once he’s on the pitch, the “job” part fades away. “Once I’m out there, it doesn’t feel like work,” he says. “It’s nice to be in a position where I can have a positive impact on players and families.”

Technical Director Greg De Carnys agrees: “Stuart’s proven track record in developing young players and his commitment to coaching excellence make him an invaluable asset to Foothills and our members. His leadership will play a crucial role in advancing our mission of fostering the growth and success of our young athletes.”

A Global Toolbox

Stuart’s coaching toolbox blends English academy standards with the growing Canadian game.

“There’s a big emphasis on individual ball mastery in England: what each player can do with the ball,” he explains. “In some respects, Canada is a few years behind England in player development, though the girls’ game here is very strong.”

He believes Foothills is helping close that gap.

“We’ve got people like Individual Player Development Program Lead Taylor Tombides, TD Greg, and Development Phase Manager Darren Bowman bringing experiences from around the world. Different ideas coming together is how we grow, progress, and keep leading.”

Emphasis on Having Fun and Protecting Mental Health

Before moving to Canada, Stuart built a youth section from scratch at a Step 5 club in England, a program that grew to approximately 140 players. That experience shapes how he approaches player development today.

“Yes, it’s about developing better players,” he says, “but I’m just as focused on the mental health side. We don’t know what’s happening at school or at home. We can at least make sure soccer is a positive place; a good, supportive environment where kids can grow and have fun.”

Advice for Parents

Stuart’s message for parents is simple:

“Be positive. Be supportive. Allow kids to be kids. We sometimes focus too much on results. In math class, they don’t get every question right, so why do we expect perfection on the pitch?”

He adds, “Make sure they’re in the right environment now to help them develop and reach their goals. Support your child on their journey. That’s what matters most.”
