A Challenging Road Trip for Calgary Foothills WFC Results in a Battle For The West Conference Championship

Santa Clarita, CA – Foothills WFC’s [‘Foothills’] second road trip of the United Women’s Soccer League [‘UWS’] season began with high hopes of securing a West Conference title. It was a tough start for the Foothills UWS team losing 2-1 to Los Angeles Soccer Club [‘LASC’]. Foothills took the lead in the second half via a free kick from Isabel Monck after great moments in possession and troubling the LASC goal on multiple occasions. LASC responded late in the second half with two goals from distance which handed the Foothills WFC team their first loss of the season.

“It’s just the nature of football sometimes,” said Assistant Coach Luis Tinoco in a post-game interview. “It’s always difficult to come away from home. Going up 1-0, I thought that we were in control of our chances and possession. If you don’t deal with those possessions and turn them into goals, you leave yourself vulnerable at the back.”

For the second game of their California trip, Foothills WFC took on the west coast powerhouse Santa Clarita Blue Heat [‘SCFC’ or ‘SC Blue Heat’]. Foothills went into the game having beaten SC Blue Heat in the first game in Calgary, 1-0 on June 17th.

Saturday’s match was evenly poised early on, with both teams showing good moments in possession until the 25th minute when SCFC was awarded a free kick on the right-hand side. Armenian international Sydney Vermillion delivered the ball deep into the Foothills’ penalty area, where the ball eventually landed at the feet of Elizabeth Worden, who poked the ball into the back of the net. Foothills responded well and had two great chances to equalize through Mya Jones and Caleigh Boeckx. The chances kept coming for both teams before a mistake in the Foothills’ backline when trying to play out from a goal kick gave the ball to Jamaican international Olufolasade Adamolekun, who set the ball through for the impressive Worden to grab her second goal of the night.

The second half continued in the same fashion, with both teams having chances. Andersen Williams had Foothills’ best chance of the night to make it 2-1 and start the comeback, but her close-range effort was saved by GK Jordan Brown. As Foothills pushed to get back into the game, SC Blue Heat was able to capitalize on the open space, and Worden completed her hat trick late in the game. The final score was 3-0 for SCFC.

Tinoco had this to say about Saturday’s loss: “Obviously, it’s disappointing losing 3-0. Santa Clarita has a very talented team. I think that they took advantage of that talent. They had some key moments where some of their individuals stepped up with moments of brilliance.”

“It was a tough game with a tough outcome,” adds Captain of Foothills Tori Martyn. “I believe in these girls more than anything else, and this isn’t the end for Foothills. So come check us out at our last game, and we’re going to continue onwards.”

The West Conference title is still up for grabs, with Foothills, SC Blue Heat, and LASC competing for the top spot. Foothills looks to capitalize on their final opportunity to add 3 points to the standings on July 7th as they take on Reno Vikings. About United Women’s Soccer (UWS) League

UWS is a national pro-am league composed of professionally operated clubs within the United States and Canada. UWS provides high-level competition for college players, aspiring and former professionals, and international stars. The overarching goal of this league is to achieve equality of opportunity for women’s soccer. In a time when there are several professional and amateur leagues for men’s soccer across North America, a huge gap exists between the college and professional ranks on the women’s side. UWS fills that gap by providing a pathway to pro for the amateur player.
