Foothills WFC Ends 2023 League 1 Alberta Season

CALGARY, AB – Calgary Foothills WFC (Foothills or the Club) officially wrapped up its 2023 League 1 Alberta season on July 24, defeating the Calgary Blizzard (Blizzard) 2-0. It was a bittersweet end to an important season for Foothills. While the team delivered a stellar performance for fans, it wasn’t enough to move them into a spot in the finals.

Head Coach, Sarah Taylor, summarized the final game. “I’m really proud of the group’s performance. It was an important win for us. Blizzard is a top team, and to come out with 3 points against them shows what type of group we have. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a spot in the finals this year, but that will be our mission for the next season.”

The Foothills squad ended with a 5-3-1 record and had several high points. Taylor explained, “Short seasons can sometimes be challenging given there is limited time to build team chemistry, but I think that was one really special aspect of this group — there was always a high level of teamwork and camaraderie and the team always put in the work for each other.”

Standout players from the season include:

  • Team Captain Brooklyn Colvin. Colvin was a consistent and valuable part of the backline. She provided a sense of security in her centre back position.
  • Cheyenne Lehmann. Lehmann was an integral part of the team, scoring two important goals this year and consistently fueling the team’s energy.
  • Ella Djuranic. A midfielder, Djuranic consistently showed up with a tremendous work-rate and ready to fight for her teammates.

Another highlight was the involvement of youth players from the Foothills Club. Several made a significant impact, such as Reese Kincaid.  Youth involvement is integral to meeting the Club’s mission to pave the PATHWAY TO PRO. Participation in League 1 Alberta is a steppingstone that provides our young female players exposure to the next level.

Taylor is optimistic about what she saw on the field. She says, “It was an exciting inaugural League 1 Alberta season for us, and I believe we have much more to give as a group. League 1 Alberta is a significant addition to the player pathway and I’m thankful to be a part of it. I also wanted to mention the fans’ unwavering support, which played a massive role in creating an exciting environment at the matches and contributed to some great performances.”

Djuranic had this to say about the League 1 Alberta experience, “I was very excited for League 1 to host this exhibition series, and it did not disappoint. The whole team is very grateful to all the fans who came out to support us this season at such a well-maintained home field. We look forward to next season providing us with more teams to compete against and continuing our pathway to the next level.”

Foothills WFC would like to thank the team’s fans and sponsors for making the 2023 season memorable. Their support allows for the growth of women’s soccer in our country and generates opportunities for current and future players to strive for higher levels. See you in 2024!
