Calgary Foothills Soccer Club (“Foothills” or “the Club”) announced today with mixed emotions the departure of Jonathan “Jay” Wheeldon, a stalwart figure in the Club’s leadership, who has accepted a full-time position with Cavalry FC of the Canadian Premier League as its 1st Team Assistant Coach and Technical Director. Jay’s last day with the Club will be March 15.
Jay’s journey with Foothills began in 2013 and spanned an impressive 11 years of dedicated service. Jay served in various capacities throughout his tenure, leaving an indelible mark on the Club’s development and success. He held pivotal roles such as Skills Academy Manager, Boys Academy Manager, Assistant Technical Director, and most recently, Club Technical Director.
Under Jay’s guidance and expertise, Foothills saw remarkable growth and achievement, both on and off the field. His commitment to player development, coaching excellence, and fostering a culture of professionalism has been instrumental in shaping the Club’s identity and nurturing young talent. In 2023, Jay played a pivotal role in supporting the formation of League1 Alberta. In the League’s inaugural exhibition season, he led the Calgary Foothills FC team to a championship season with an undefeated record. During his coaching career, Jay won two National Championships with the 2002 girls in 2016 and the 2002 boys in 2019.
As Jay embarks on this exciting new chapter with our friends at Cavalry FC, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for his invaluable contributions and wish him the best in his future endeavors. His passion, leadership, and dedication will be greatly missed, but his legacy will endure within our Club.
