Born in Raleigh, North Carolina in 2002, Chituru “Ethan” Odunze has lived a soccer journey that spans continents. Raised partly in England, he began his youth career in South London and the Chelsea Academy system before his family relocated to Calgary. There, he sharpened his craft with Calgary Villains, Blizzard, and Calgary Foothills, quickly establishing himself as one of Canada’s brightest young goalkeeping talents.
By 2017, Odunze entered the Vancouver Whitecaps Academy, where he impressed at youth showcases like the Generation Adidas Cup, earning recognition as one of the top young goalkeepers in North America. His performances caught the eye of scouts overseas, and in August 2019 he made the leap to England, signing with Leicester City’s U-21s. Over four years with the Foxes, he logged 20 Premier League 2 appearances and gained valuable experience training in a Premier League environment.
Internationally, Odunze has worn the crest of the United States at multiple levels. Eligible for the U.S., Canada, England, and Nigeria, he committed to the Stars and Stripes, representing the U-17s at the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil, starting two group-stage matches. He later earned call-ups with the U-20s and U-23s, including the 2023 Pan American Games, and in November 2020 was invited to his first senior USMNT camp.
In August 2023, Odunze joined Crown Legacy FC, Charlotte FC’s MLS NEXT Pro affiliate, where his performances — highlighted by shot-stopping athleticism and confidence in distribution — earned him a first-team contract with Charlotte FC in January 2024. The deal, guaranteed through 2027 with a club option for 2028, marked a major step forward.
His time in Charlotte has also been marked by unique recognition: in 2024, Odunze defended his title in the MLS NEXT Pro All-Star Goalie Wars competition, showcasing his reflexes and personality in front of a national audience.
At 6’7”, Chituru “Ethan” Odunze has always stood tall, both literally and figuratively, but it is his perseverance, adaptability, and hunger to improve that set him apart. From Calgary fields to Premier League academies, from a U-17 World Cup to Charlotte’s first team, his story is still being written, with his eyes set firmly on the U.S. senior national team and a long professional career ahead.
