For William Omoreniye, soccer has always been about chasing growth, whether at home in Calgary, on the U SPORTS stage, or across the globe. Born in Russia but raised in Alberta, William came through the Calgary Blizzard and Calgary Foothills youth systems, earning a place on Team Alberta at the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games, where he stood out as a composed left back.
That same fall, he entered the University of Calgary Dinos program and immediately made an impact. As a first-year player in 2022, he led the Dinos with four goals and three assists, performances that earned him a place on the U SPORTS All-Rookie Team.
His collegiate success caught the attention of Cavalry FC, who selected him 7th overall in the 2023 CPL–U SPORTS Draft and signed him to a developmental contract. Though his appearances were limited, head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. described him as a high-upside prospect, emphasizing his balance of athleticism and technical growth.
Seeking more competitive minutes, William made a bold move in 2024, joining Ōle Football Academy and Western Suburbs FC in New Zealand’s Central League. There, he worked under Canadian coach Alan Koch, who praised him as “a very dynamic, skillful player who has a great appetite to learn, grow, and get better.” The overseas stint broadened his experience and put him on the radar of both Canadian and international clubs.
In 2025, William returned to his roots, rejoining the Calgary Blizzard as part of their League1 Alberta men’s side. His return to Blizzard reflects a full-circle moment — from youth development with the club, to national recognition, to professional and international stints, and back to help grow the game in his hometown.
William Omoreniye’s story is still very much being written. His trajectory — from local pitches in Calgary, to a U SPORTS breakout, to the CPL Draft, to a developmental year abroad — illustrates the evolving pathways available for Canadian players.
