CALGARY, AB: July 10, 2024 –
It was a sweet night for Calgary Foothills on July 9 as both its men’s (FC) and women’s (WFC) League1 Alberta teams brought home wins against Calgary Blizzard. FC won 3-1, and the WFC secured another shutout, winning 2-0.
WFC game time was 5:00 p.m. 16-
year-old goalkeeper Sarah Bach continued an incredible season in net, keeping the opposing team scoreless. Forward Cheyenne Lehmann also had an outstanding night, scoring one goal and setting up Avril Jamieson for the second.
“The Blizzard / Foothills rivalry is always fun. We really needed to have a strong performance to get back into the league table race, and I think we delivered,” said Head Coach Colin Mackay. “Full credit for the win goes to the girls. They were outstanding for the full 90 minutes. Sarah has been strong all season and was again tonight. We’ve been missing goal-scoring, but Cheyenne delivered for us. I’m looking forward to our game Friday night against the ASA High Performance team. Tonight’s win helped propel them into top spot in the league and we’re looking forward to challenging them to keep it.”
FC’s 8:00 p.m. game was a character builder. After having a goal disallowed in the first half and going down 1-0 to Blizzard, FC fought back to bring home the win. Head Coach Marc McLaren wants to keep the momentum the team is enjoying going into the final two games of the regular season. “Tonight’s win was a vindication of our loss to Blizzard earlier in the season. I’m feeling good about the next two games. We have gained momentum after a slow start with a streak of wins and one tie. I’m excited for the boys and proud of their turnaround.”
Owen Antoniuk scored twice for FC with Sky Rogers adding one. Rodane Cato and the entire backline had a strong, solid performance to keep the Blizzard to one.
Both teams play host this Friday night at Broadview Park. Foothills WFC plays the ASA High Performance team at 5:00 p.m. Foothills FC will meet Cavalry FC U21 at 8:00 p.m. Get your tickets here or at the gate.
