CALGARY, AB: May 8, 2024 –

Calgary Foothills Men’s (FC) and Women’s (WFC) teams hosted their League1 Alberta season openers last night. The Club played Southwest United (Callies) in a doubleheader. The Foothills teams battled hard against the newcomers to the League, but both games ended in hard-fought 0-0 draws.

WFC began its season with a resilient display in a tightly contested match. Despite dominating possession and registering ten attempts on target, Foothills could not break the deadlock.

“The team showed great strength controlling possession, but we have some work to do to improve the quality of our attacking play,” said Head Coach Colin Mackay. Our goalkeeper, Sarah Bach, did a great job shutting down the Callies’ counterattacks and helped us get our first shutout of the season.”

In its season opener, FC also fought a fiercely competitive battle that ended in a nail-biting 0-0 draw. The team showcased its attacking prowess, executing excellent scoring opportunities throughout the match, but was unsuccessful in getting on the scoreboard. The intensity escalated when FC went down to 10 players in the 90th minute following Charles Nana’s second yellow card for simulation. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Foothills displayed resilience and determination, holding on to secure the hard-earned point with a gritty defensive effort and a standout performance from goalkeeper Sterling Kerr, who was a big reason the team earned a clean sheet.

Both teams will capitalize on the lessons learned on May 7 as they prepare for their upcoming fixture against St Albert Impact in another doubleheader on May 10 at the Macron Performance centre. The WFC game begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by FC at 8:00 p.m. Tickets to the doubleheader will be available at the door, or season tickets can be purchased here.

League1 Alberta is the province of Alberta’s pro-am, standards-based senior league. It serves as a stepping stone between Alberta’s high-performance youth level, elite amateur, and professional levels. League1 Alberta’s goal is to showcase and develop Canada’s future soccer stars, coaches, and match officials. In 2024, League1 Alberta expanded to include additional teams and has officially joined League1 Canada. This season is expected to be more competitive than ever.

In 2023, Foothills FC placed first in the regular season and then won the championship final against St. Albert Impact in front of a hometown crowd. The team’s outstanding results were especially sweet since it was the League’s inaugural season, and they are looking forward to a repeat performance in 2024. Foothills WFC ended the 2023 season with a 5-3-1 record. The team saw significant improvement as the year progressed, including winning its final regular-season game. It is positioned to continue gaining momentum and bring home a championship in 2024. The Foothills WFC League1 Alberta team is coached by Colin Mackay.
