For more than a decade, Charlie Trafford built a career spanning Finland, Poland, Scotland, and Wales before finally returning to Calgary, where he helped Cavalry FC capture its first Canadian Premier League title in 2024.
Born in Calgary in 1992, Charlie came through Calgary Foothills and the Vancouver Whitecaps Academy before spending time with Dutch side De Graafschap. After a short collegiate stop at York University, he turned pro with SC Toronto in 2012, marking the start of an odyssey that would take him across Europe. In Finland, he earned recognition with KuPS, where he was named the club’s Player of the Year in 2014. Moves to Korona Kielce and Sandecja Nowy Sącz in Poland followed, with Trafford part of the latter’s I liga championship side in 2016–17.
By 2017, he was in Scotland with Inverness Caledonian Thistle, where he made over 70 league appearances across three seasons before moving on to Hamilton Academical. Short stints with RoPS in Finland and Wrexham in Wales added to a career that touched nearly every corner of Europe’s smaller leagues. Along the way, Charlie earned three senior caps for Canada between 2015 and 2017, debuting against Ghana.
His homecoming came in February 2022, when Cavalry FC announced his signing. By 2024, Charlie was central to the Cavs’ midfield and their march to the North Star Cup.
After lifting silverware with Cavalry and competing in the Concacaf Champions Cup, Charlie announced his retirement on March 25, 2025. The club lauded him as a hometown professional who had “finished with historic victories with Cavs.”
Even in retirement, Charlie Trafford’s impact on Canadian soccer continues. He has turned his focus to community, farming, and leadership, co-founding Trafford Farms and joining the ownership group of Calgary Wild FC, a founding team in the Northern Super League. In 2025 he was honoured to be named one of Calgary’s “Top 40 Under 40.”
