Calgary-born Dean Northover’s story begins with the Calgary Villains, where he won a U-16 National Championship in 2007. That early triumph set the stage for a career spent almost entirely within Alberta’s growing soccer ecosystem.

Dean then became a mainstay for Calgary Foothills FC in the USL PDL from 2015 to 2018, known for his composure on the ball and hard-nosed one-vs-one defending. He was part of the side that lifted the 2018 PDL Championship, Calgary Foothills’ crowning moment before the launch of the Canadian Premier League. During this period, he also excelled at SAIT, where he scored 17 goals in 24 games across two seasons and became the first men’s player in a decade to win back-to-back ACAC Player of the Year awards (2017, 2018).

When the CPL launched in 2019, Dean was one of Cavalry FC’s foundational signings. He made his professional debut on May 4, 2019, in Cavalry’s very first CPL match against York9. For head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr., the move was natural: “Dean is a terrific player… very consistent with exceptional control and one-vs-one defending.”

But that debut season also brought heartbreak. In July 2019, Dean tore his ACL, sidelining him for the remainder of the year.  After a grueling rehabilitation, Cavalry re-signed him in August 2020, and Dean returned to the pitch at the Island Games.

True to his character, he fought his way back into match fitness, earning praise once again from Wheeldon Jr., who described him as a “10 out of 10 character… never afraid to roll up his sleeves… an amazing attitude to overcome adversity.”

In January 2021, at just 29, Dean announced his retirement. For a player who had given so much to Calgary’s soccer culture, it was a bittersweet farewell. He left the game as a PDL champion, a two-time collegiate player of the year, and one of Cavalry’s original stalwarts.

From youth national titles to PDL glory, from the agony of injury to the resilience of a comeback, Dean Northover remains a symbol of the Calgary pathway and proof that a player can stay close to home and still make a lasting mark on Canadian professional soccer.
