Gareth Smith-Doyle was born in Calgary, Alberta in 2002, and represents a new generation of Canadian forwards rising through the domestic game. Standing over six feet tall, he blends physical presence with pace and an eye for goal, traits that earned him a place in both university and professional football before his 22nd birthday.
Gareth first came to prominence with the University of Calgary Dinos in 2021. In his debut season, he netted twice in 10 appearances and was named to the Canada West All-Rookie Team, setting the tone for a promising career. That same year, he continued his youth development with Calgary Foothills, and later for Cavalry FC’s U20 squad, where he scored an impressive nine goals in nine matches in the Alberta Major Soccer League.
His breakthrough came in August 2022, when Cavalry FC signed him to his first professional contract in the Canadian Premier League. Cavalry head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. described him as “a traditional centre forward… terrific pace and a very good goal-scoring record at each level.”
Across the 2022 and 2023 CPL seasons, Gareth made 21 league appearances, growing steadily into his role. His biggest moment came on September 29, 2023, when he scored his first professional goal, a decisive winner in a 2–1 victory over Valour FC.
In 2023, he also featured in Cavalry’s push to the CPL Final. Though used as a substitute, his presence on the matchday squad for the championship game underscored his progress within the team’s ranks.
After Cavalry declined his 2024 option, Gareth returned to his roots with Calgary Foothills FC in League1 Alberta (now Alberta Premier League), where he has added goals and experience. It is a return to the club that helped shape him and a reminder of his determination to keep growing in the game.
Gareth Smith-Doyle has consistently shown resilience, humility, and hunger. Still in his early 20s in 2026, he is a Calgary striker aiming to write the next chapter in his hometown’s soccer story.
