Growing up in Calgary, Maxim Kalina never had to look far for a ball at his feet. His earliest days in football were spent with Calgary Foothills. It was here that he learned the fundamentals: composure on the ball, strength in the tackle, and the responsibility of organizing from the back.

By his mid-teens, Maxim’s performances began to draw attention outside of Alberta. In 2023, he earned the call that every young Canadian player dreams of — a spot in the Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2. For his family, it was a moment of immense pride.

In Vancouver, Maxim grew into his role as a center back. The Whitecaps environment challenged him every day, pairing him with elite youth talent from across the country. He soon had moments to celebrate: an MLS NEXT match post from the club highlighted him on the scoresheet, showing that even as a defender, he could make an impact going forward.

After two years in Vancouver, Maxim took the next step in his career by committing to the University of Rhode Island. Moving into the NCAA Division I ranks was a bold leap, but it didn’t take long for him to make his presence felt. On August 21, 2025, in his collegiate debut against Iona, he started in defense and immediately influenced the match. His low shot was blocked, but teammate Vasić pounced on the rebound to score the equalizer. The play was recorded in the official match recap, marking Kalina’s first collegiate assist on his very first night in a Rams shirt.

Maxim Kalina’s story is still in its early chapters. From Foothills, to the Whitecaps, and Rhode Island in the NCAA, each step has been a bigger stage than the last. He carries with him the pride of his family’s words, the lessons of the academy system, and the confidence that comes from making an immediate impact in college soccer.
