Melissa Roy was born and raised in Quebec. She became a fixture for the Université Laval Rouge et Or, anchoring the defense from 2012 to 2018. As a freshman in 2014 she made an immediate impact, earning CIS/U SPORTS Rookie of the Year and a place as a First-Team All-Canadian. Melissa would go on to help Laval capture national titles in 2014 and 2016, while also earning recognition in futsal, where she was named RSEQ Indoor Player of the Year (2018).
Her talents extended beyond the university game. In 2016, Melissa joined the Santa Clarita Blue Heat of United Women’s Soccer (UWS), contributing to their title-winning season. The following year, she signed with Calgary Foothills WFC, bringing veteran presence to an expansion squad. She was recognized with All-UWS honors before moving to the Grand Rapids FC Women in 2018.
That same year marked a new chapter, as she signed professionally with FC Fleury 91 in France’s Division 1 Féminine, one of the most competitive leagues in the world. For Melissa, stepping into the European professional environment after building her career in North America was both a challenge and an achievement.
Internationally, Melissa wore Canadian colours at the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan and represented her country at two Summer Universiades: 2015 in Gwangju and 2017 in Taipei.
Throughout her career, teammates and coaches emphasized her leadership. At Laval, she was known not just for her defensive strength but her steadying presence on and off the field. At Treaty matches and Universiade tournaments, she was seen as a role model to younger players. And in her stints across UWS and France, her adaptability to different playing styles highlighted both her resilience and football intelligence.
Melissa Roy’s journey has spanned university championships, semi-professional titles, European competition, and the Canadian maple leaf on her chest. From Quebec to California, Calgary, Michigan, and France, she has proven herself a defender of quality and character.
