Mya Jones grew up in Calgary with a ball at her feet and a dream of playing at the highest level. By the time she was twelve, she had already joined Calgary Foothills, the club where her raw pace and sharp touch quickly set her apart. Those years were the foundation of everything to come. Coaches remember her ability to glide past defenders with ease, a spark that carried her into Canada’s youth development pathways, first with Alberta South REX, and later with the Vancouver Whitecaps Girls Elite REX program.
Mya’s promise was recognized early. Wearing the maple leaf, she won gold with Canada’s U-15s at the 2014 CONCACAF Championship and added silver two years later. Youth national team appearances at the U-17 and U-20 levels followed, giving her both confidence and hunger to aim for the senior squad.
College soccer in the United States became her next proving ground. In 2019, she packed her bags for Memphis, Tennessee, and stepped into the NCAA with the Memphis Tigers. Across five seasons, she grew from a promising freshman into the heartbeat of the attack. Ninety-three games later, she had 26 goals, 27 assists, and three straight conference titles to her name. Her senior year was unforgettable: she was voted the AAC Offensive Player of the Year, named Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the AAC Championship, and landed on the Hermann Trophy Watch List, marking her as one of the best in the college game.
Summers often brought her back to Calgary, where she continued to suit up for Foothills WFC in the United Women’s Soccer league. In 2022 she dominated the league, winning both MVP and West Conference Attacking Player of the Year. Her coach, Lee Tucker, summed it up simply: “She’s one of the most exciting dynamic attacking players in the country… This girl needs an opportunity.”
That opportunity came in January 2024 when the San Diego Wave called her name in the NWSL Draft. Selected 42nd overall, she made history as the first Memphis player ever drafted into the league. Signing her contract just weeks later, she stepped onto the field for her professional debut on April 27 against Bay FC. Two months after that, she celebrated her first NWSL goal against NJ/NY Gotham, a moment she shared with fans online, proof that the long hours of training had paid off.
Then came the homecoming. In February 2025, Mya returned to Canada on loan to AFC Toronto, a charter member of the brand-new Northern Super League. For Mya, the move was more than a transfer, it was history. “Canada has waited years for a professional women’s soccer league,” she said. “It felt like the natural next step to develop my career. I’m excited to use that experience to help make history and inspire young Canadian players.”
In February of 2026, Mya signed with the Calgary Wild of the NSL.
At just twenty-three, Mya Jones is still writing her story. From a girl in Calgary Foothills with a dream, to an NCAA standout, to an NWSL goal scorer, and now a pioneer in Canada’s first women’s professional league.
