Michael Cox was born in Calgary in 1992. He first turned heads as a 17-year-old when he joined FC Edmonton for their inaugural NASL campaign. In June 2010, he etched his name in club history by scoring their first-ever exhibition goal, later adding a brace against the Montreal Impact that cemented his reputation as a promising forward.
After three seasons with Edmonton, Michael broadened his horizons, heading to Europe in 2014 to sign with Kuopion Palloseura (KuPS) in Finland’s Veikkausliiga.
In 2015, Michael returned home to Canada and joined Calgary Foothills FC for their inaugural Premier Development League (PDL) season. Under coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr., he played a key role in establishing the club’s attack and used that platform to reignite his professional career. His strong performances with Foothills helped him earn national attention and set the stage for what came next.
That same year, he joined the York University Lions, where he dominated at the collegiate level, scoring 24 goals in 22 matches, earning CIS (U SPORTS) Championship MVP honours, and helping York capture the national title. His performances rekindled professional interest, and in 2016 he joined Orlando City B in the USL, where he led the team with 11 goals in his debut season.
Michael’s next stops included Nashville SC, where he scored the first goal in club history and secured their first-ever victory in 2018, and Saint Louis FC later that year. In 2019, newly founded York9 FC in the Canadian Premier League brought him home again. Head coach Jimmy Brennan described him as “a big man who loves to stretch the field and get behind defenders. He’s built to score goals in this league.”
Though injuries limited his CPL campaign, Michael embraced Canada’s growing domestic scene, saying, “It’s good that Canada has its own league now… It’s definitely something that I never had growing up.” He later represented BTB SC in League1 Alberta’s 2024 season, tallying five goals in eight matches, before signing with Edmonton Scottish in 2025.
Off the pitch, Michael transitioned into coaching while still playing competitively. His dual role as mentor and striker reflects a commitment to nurturing the next generation of Canadian talent.
