For goalkeeper Simon Thomas, the path from Victoria, British Columbia, to Europe’s top leagues and the Canadian national team has been anything but straightforward. It has taken him from youth clubs in BC, through MLS and England’s lower divisions, to a decade-long adventure across Norway.
Simon’s early promise was evident when he joined the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency in 2007, and he made his senior debut in 2010. A spell at Huddersfield Town in England followed, but it was his return to Canada in 2013 that gave him his breakthrough: signing with the Vancouver Whitecaps FC first team in MLS. That same year, he earned his first senior call-up with Canada, debuting in January 2013 before being named to the CONCACAF Gold Cup squad. In 2014, he joined Calgary Foothills FC for the season.
After loan spells with FC Edmonton and a stint with Newport County in England, Simon found his footing in Norway. Between 2015 and 2019, he played for Strømmen, Kongsvinger, and KFUM Oslo, building a reputation as a reliable shot-stopper in the OBOS-ligaen. In 2016, he stepped up to Norway’s top tier with Bodø/Glimt, making his Eliteserien debut against Viking FK.
His steady play kept him in the Canadian picture, where he accumulated eight senior caps between 2013 and 2017, including appearances in World Cup Qualifiers and Nations League matches.
In 2020, Simon joined Sarpsborg 08, and by 2021 he had signed for Tromsø IL. His contract was extended through 2025, proof of his value in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues. Tromsø fans know him as a calming, experienced presence between the posts.
Simon Thomas represents a rare story in Canadian soccer: a goalkeeper who, without the traditional college route, built his career through resilience, travel, and a willingness to take risks overseas. From Victoria’s Bays United to Tromsø, Norway, his journey underscores both the challenges and rewards of pursuing a professional career in the game as a Canadian abroad.
