Sterling Kerr was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, where he built a reputation as a commanding goalkeeper. His journey began in local youth systems, including Cavalry U20, before he took his talents to Mount Royal University in 2018. Over five seasons with the Cougars, Sterling became a cornerstone of their back line. His 2022 campaign stood out in particular: he posted a remarkable .870 save percentage, a 0.519 goals-against average, and 7.5 shutouts, leading MRU to a Canada West bronze medal and earning recognition as a U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian and Canada West All-Star. He also claimed the Canada West Student-Athlete Community Service Award, reflecting his impact off the pitch as well.
Looking back on his student-athlete experience, Kerr admitted, “Playing soccer and being able to get an education at the same time is never something I really dreamed of before coming to MRU and it has really elevated both my soccer and my ability in the classroom.”
In March 2023, Kerr signed with Cavalry FC on a U SPORTS contract. He was described as a reliable and competitive third option in the goalkeeping group, and in August the club extended his deal through the end of the season.
After his stint with Cavalry, Sterling continued his progression in the Alberta Premier League (formerly League1 Alberta) with Calgary Foothills FC in 2024. He is quote as saying ““I play for Foothills because of its culture of success and history of advancing players to play at the next level. I want to use my past experience to fuel myself and the team to
compete at an elite level in every game and contend for a League1 title this season.” He featured prominently in the league’s debut campaign, with Northern Tribune and local outlets highlighting his steady presence and clean sheets for Foothills.
In 2025, Sterling’s career expanded into coaching when he was named goalkeeper/assistant coach at theUniversity of Saskatchewan, bringing his playing experience and leadership into the next generation of Canadian players.
Alongside the accolades, Sterling has been celebrated for his character. Northern Tribune praised him as someone who would “provide a third layer of competition for the number one spot,” while match reports consistently noted his clean sheets and composure under pressure.
From Calgary youth fields to U SPORTS distinction, the Canadian Premier League, and now the sidelines as a coach, Sterling Kerr’s journey demonstrates resilience, adaptability, and a drive to give back to the game that shaped him.
