Theodore “Theo” Afework was born on January 24, 2004, in Calgary, Alberta. He began his soccer journey at the age of four, playing in Calgary for the Rangers and Blizzards and then settled with Calgary Foothills.

At 13, Theo took a significant step by joining the prestigious Vancouver Whitecaps FC Academy, where he developed his skills and gained exposure to elite-level training. His time at the academy was formative, equipping him with technical ability and tactical understanding that would prepare him for the professional stage.

Theo’s talent caught the attention of national team scouts, and in 2019 he earned a call-up to the Canada U15 National Team. Representing his country at the CONCACAF U-15 Championship, he appeared in all five matches and contributed a goal, showcasing his potential on the international youth stage.

Eager to challenge himself further, Theo moved to Germany to join FC Nürnberg’s U19 squad for the 2022-2023 season. There, he made an immediate impact, tallying 10 appearances with 1 goal and 2 assists. One of his most memorable moments came in a DFB-Pokal der Junioren quarterfinal, where he scored a late winner against RB Leipzig, demonstrating his clutch performance ability and composure under pressure.

In March 2023, Theo returned to Canada, signing a two-year contract with York United FC in the Canadian Premier League. His signing was hailed by York’s management as a promising addition, praising his athleticism, technical skills, and upside as a striker. His time at York United marked an important chapter in his professional career as he gained experience in Canada’s top domestic league.

After his professional stint with York United FC, Theo Afework entered a new phase of his development in 2025 with the UBC Thunderbirds. He made an immediate impact in his first university season, scoring important goals and helping one of Canada’s top programs maintain its high standard in Canada West play. His performances earned him a place on the 2025 Canada West Men’s Soccer All-Rookie Team, adding another strong chapter to a career that has already spanned academy, international youth, professional, and university environments.
