CALGARY, AB: July 28, 2025 –Both Foothills FC and WFC are now in must-win scenarios heading into the final League1 Alberta regular season match this Tuesday, following a pair of hard-fought losses to St. Albert Impact Friday night.
WFC Falls 2-1 to Impact
WFC started strong with a sharp, well-organized performance. The breakthrough came in the 16th minute when winger Rachel Barlow finished off a smooth team build-up to put WFC ahead 1-0. Despite the visitors’ sustained press, Grace Hannaford came close to doubling the lead midway through the half.
After halftime, WFC continued to create chances with Barlow and Hannaford both testing the St. Albert defense. However, the momentum shifted in the 72nd minute when Kayla Mostowich equalized for the Impact. The visitors went ahead ten minutes later due to a goal by Adalyn Fairweather, and despite a late push that included a near miss from Brooklyn Blake, WFC were edged 2-1 at the final whistle.
“We knew this would be difficult game for us,” said Head Coach Lee Tucker. ”We have a lot of respect for the St. Albert team, which is always well organised and challenging to play against. There were a lot of positives in the game despite the result, and we now need to refocus and go for the win on Tuesday. If we can get 3 points, we will be top of the league again and have a chance of becoming league champions. Rachel Barlow, Grace Hannaford and Anneke Odinga have been in excellent form recently, and we will be looking to them to drive us over the line.”
WFC Falls 6 – 4 to Impact
Jamie Nicholson, Robert Woodroffe Brown, Evan Cunningham, and Amadou Bayo all found the back of the net for our FC squad in a high-scoring match but ultimately fell 6-4 to a sharp-attacking Impact. The game slipped away in the second half, where Impact added three goals to secure the win.
“We had some real moments of quality and kept fighting to the end,” said Head Coach Connor Brady. “Now our focus is on finishing strong Tuesday night and showing who we are in front of our home fans.”
Tuesday, July 29: Foothills Hosts Calgary Rangers at Macron Performance Centre
Both Foothills squads play at home on Tuesday, July 29, for one final push in the League1 Alberta regular season. The doubleheader vs. the Calgary Rangers will determine the end-of-season standings.
For WFC, a win is crucial to reclaim the top spot in the standings after slipping to second behind the Calgary Blizzard. For FC, victory could see them finish in the top 3 for the season.
Both coaches are proud of the results their respective teams have achieved so far this season and are focused on the task at hand.
Coach Tucker says, “We are focused on finishing the season with a win and putting some pressure on Blizzard for their remaining game. We are proud of our record to date and want to show well in front of our supporters.”
Adds Coach Brady, “We are preparing as we would for any other must-win game. We understand our position in the table. Each loss has presented us with an opportunity to grow and learn, and this group has done just that. Developing the person along with the player has always been the goal. The players understand that they have the responsibility to show young players how to react and respond when things don’t go their way, and how to put their best foot forward each time, regardless of the results or standing. The lads have represented Foothills with everything they have; they have been great role models for our youth athletes, and we want to come away with another 3 points on Tuesday!”
