Foothills WFC head coach Troye Flannery says he is proud of the team’s season and knew it would be more difficult than previous years.
“With respect to the quality in the Western Conference of all the franchises and the product they put on the pitch. The rosters are very deep. Travel in this Western Conference is ridiculously difficult, so for us to persevere and win is huge.”
“We put together a roster of a returning core and some new faces to give us more depth than we’ve ever had.”
Forwards Mya Jones, who was away on a university course, and Tanya Boychuk, who was part of a three-game friendly tour with team Canada’s U20s, return to Foothills WFC in time for these matches and the team is at full health. However, striker Joelle Gosselin signed with Jyväskylän Pallokerho from the first division in Finland and has had to depart before this weekend to join that team in their quest for a Finnish playoff spot.
Foothills WFC’s challengers come from three different regions of the United States. The Inferno from Pennsylvania won the Eastern Conference title with two upset victories in their championship weekend. The Union (Indianapolis), took the Midwest Conference with wins at home against their opponents from Detroit and Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The L.A. Galaxy OC Women return to Calgary after earning the Western Conference wild card position then this past Saturday, stopping the defending league champions, the Houston Aces, 4-1 to earn their spot in the tournament. Foothills FC tied Galaxy 1-1 in California and defeated them 1-0 in Calgary on June 16. If Galaxy and Foothills WFC meet up in the championship final, another chapter will be written in their intense and physical rivalry.

ABOUT UWS
The league was formed late in 2015 under the belief that there was a gap in the development of the female soccer player between the collegiate game and the professional & international game.
A dedicated Tier 2 league was needed. UWS will fill that gap with a summer competitive season that will help the collegiate player evolve & enhance their game for fall competition while giving the post-collegiate player a chance to further develop for the professional & international ranks.
