In a tightly contested League1 Alberta doubleheader at Macron Performance Centre, both Foothills WFC and FC teams came up just short against Calgary Blizzard on Friday evening. Despite strong performances and determined play, the women fell 1-0 while the men dropped a 2-1 decision.
WFC 0 – 1 Calgary Blizzard
It was a frustrating result for Foothills WFC, who controlled much of the play and generated scoring opportunities but were unable to find the back of the net. Blizzard’s lone goal came late in the second half and proved to be the difference.
“Myla Schneider was outstanding at the back and Isabel Monck did a terrific job controlling the midfield,” said Head Coach Lee Tucker. “We created chances and managed the game well but lacked ruthlessness in the final third. I give credit to the girls. They never gave up and played hard to the final whistle. We’ll need to sharpen up in front of the goal as we enter the final stretch of the season.”
FC 1 – 2 Calgary Blizzard
The men’s match was a spirited, back-and-forth battle between two very evenly matched sides. Blizzard opened the scoring late in the first half, despite FC having much of the momentum.
FC came out strong in the second half and equalized through Robert Woodroffe-Browne, who finished off an excellent setup by BK Ogbuke. As the game intensified, Blizzard regained the lead with another late strike. FC showed resilience and continued to push, earning a penalty with 10 minutes remaining. Amadou Bayo stepped up to take it, but the Blizzard goalkeeper came up with a big save to preserve the win.
“Hats off to Ollie Allen, who was very strong in goal for the Blizzard tonight,” said Head Coach Connor Brady. “We learned some tough but valuable lessons to take forward to Tuesday’s game. This group continues to show fight and character and that will serve us well down the stretch.”
