Calgary, Alberta – Foothills FC is pleased to announce that former Canadian International Martin Nash has joined the coaching staff as Assistant Coach for the upcoming 2018 PDL season. Martin has previous experience coaching in the PDL, USL and also at the international level. Martin has also played for the Canadian National Team 38 times, including the Gold Cup winning side in 2000.
Martin joins an already strong coaching staff that includes Head Coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr, Assistant Coach Leon Hapgood, and Goalkeeper Coach Jordan Santiago (of Calgary Rangers).
As a player, Martin enjoyed 16 years as a professional player both in England and North America, notably at Montreal Impact and Vancouver Whitecaps where he won the USL title in 2000, 2001, 2006 and 2008. Martin later became a coach in the Whitecaps system with the U19’s and PDL side prior to joining Ottawa Fury. He was Assistant Coach of Ottawa Fury from 2014 to 2016 and has coached for Canada on the youth side.
Foothills FC Head Coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr is excited to have Martin as part of the team, “Martin is a fantastic coach with a great pedigree in the professional game that will help our young players prepare themselves for the professional pathway. This will become even more valuable with the news of the Canadian Premier League launching in 2019. He is extremely passionate and knowledgeable about the game, and in particular, Canadian players. We are delighted to have him on board”.
Martin adds further national and professional level playing and coaching experience to a very experienced, talented, and exciting Foothills FC team that is ready to challenge for the PDL Northwest Division title again in 2018.
“I’m honoured to be joining Tommy’s staff, with all the tremendous work he’s done for Canadian soccer in Calgary. It’s the perfect project for me to grow as a coach and help Canadian players realize their full potential.” – Nash
