For immediate release – August 16th, 2016
Calgary, Alberta – Calgary Foothills Soccer Club (“Foothills”) is pleased to announce that it has closed the financing, and the land purchase for Calgary’s first and only full-size indoor turf facility. Foothills will commence construction on its new home in late August which represents a world class Club facility for Foothills Soccer player development.
The Facility is located in the Shepard Industrial Area with the following attributes and specifications:
Located on a 6 acre parcel of land, which will include a full size outdoor and the indoor soccer facility
125 yards long, which is longer than FIFA International field requirements
75 yards wide which meets the FIFA International field requirements
85,000 square feet of turf space, which will provide youth soccer player’s significant space for all of their training, Academy Programs, and tournaments and exhibition games.
Use Field Turf for the entire indoor facility which is a high quality product that promotes safety and provides a realistic outdoor experience. Players can wear their outdoor cleats the entire year.
Includes over 10,000 square feet of office space on two floors.
Will include a large gym and exercise room for the Sports Science Department
Will include change rooms, and office space on the first floor and spectator viewing on the second floor
The facility is located at 111 Exploration Avenue S.E. and is conveniently located off Stoney Trail and Glenmore Trail for ease of access for our members. The facility is adjacent to a wetlands area and is immediately south of Ralph Klein Park making this a picturesque location for this training complex, and visible from Stoney Trail.
Tommy Wheeldon Jr. commented that “our new home has been many years of planning, and hard work to make a reality. The facility is an example of our continued effort towards the betterment of the game, and providing Calgary youth with the best possible training environment and experience. To put this in perspective, most school gyms are 3,000 to 7,000 square feet, and Foothill’s older teams will be training in 20,000 square foot practice areas. This also provides us opportunities to play full 11v11 outdoor games as part of development and also run 6v6 and 8v8 programs and tournaments throughout the year. We are very thankful for the efforts of our strong volunteer Board that was able to make this project a reality, and the investors that have made this possible.”
The facility will begin construction in late August, and is expected to be completed in January of 2017. Foothills Soccer will continue to operate in its existing 45,000 square foot turf facility until the new facility is completed.
Mike Mikuska, President of Foothills Soccer added that “This facility is important to all of Calgary. We have members from all areas of the City and surrounding areas. This facility will also have users from other field sports such as Football, Lacrosse, Field Hockey, Ultimate Frisbee, etc. and allows for increased opportunities for many users and multiple sports. As well, this provides the ability for Calgary to host major tournaments and events in the winter season which it has never been able to do, and bring in additional tourism and sporting revenues.”
The first phase of the project will be a fully functioning indoor facility. Foothills is still looking for corporate and community involvement to finish the outdoor field, and to make additional interior improvements. Naming rights are available for the overall facility and for fields, gyms and interior areas as well.
“Parks Foundation Calgary (“PFC”) congratulates Calgary Foothills Soccer Club on the start of Phase 1 of this remarkable facility. PFC is equally excited that this amenity is directly on the Rotary/Mattamy Greenway. Our organization is committed to working with Foothills to develop Phase 2 of this Calgary icon” states Myrna Dubé, CEO of Parks Foundation Calgary.
